I want you to spread the word that Tim O'Reilly of O'Reilly Media is forcing his editors to "use" Gen AI as much as possible. The book I wrote for them, Hacker Culture: A to Z, is probably the last non-tech manual they ever published that isn't tainted by Gen AI.
I quit my goddamn fucking professor position at OPIT because I would rather risk my ability to pay my rent than subject my students to Gen AI "e proctoring."

@abucci @kimcrawley in 1999 or so I wrote to Tim O’Reilly to point out that the cover of one of his books portrayed a chimpanzee with a tail, something about as likely as a human with a tail.
His response was not “Yeah, Victorian clip art is wild, isn’t it?” but rather “I’m pretty sure some chimpanzees have tails.”

much of my early career was spent learning from the nutshell books and i happily recommended them to others. also, know a fair number of authors published by them.

Lobbying efforts
Policy recommendations
Organizing workers/unions
Direct action strategies
Political candidates or parties
For a group that positions itself as radical political activism pushback against a systemic threat, the actual political strategy appears to be: "donate to our mutual aid fund and buy our stuff."
No government regulation proposals. No union organizing. No systematic political strategy beyond mutual aid fundraising.

That's sad. I learned quite a lot from "in a nutshell", & took part in pre-publication user review with the author of a Majordomo book last century. Some of my words ended up in it.
I didn't consider myself an expert, but I maintained & administered Majordomo for the uni's staff & students, created lists, resolved list problems, wrote guides for list owners & users, &... 🤔
