Haven't been doing #SpaceSongSunday recently, because I wrote TWO songs with lots of F & F minor chords and it cramps up my hand something fierce! Trying to get some good recordings... for now, here's a rough one of "Hell for Leather" – an anthem to chaos. :3

(The drawing is for something else [wink], but it fits pretty well IMO)

Troubleshooting the hand cramp (what I was ACTUALLY planning to share):
🚫: Skateboard wrist brace (the rigid plastic palm didn't replace my thumb)
βœ…: Athletic tape on the back of the #guitar neck (better grip = less clamping force)
πŸ€”: Added a ridge (an old pen under more tape – see pic). Still testing
❓: Different fingering
❓: 3D-print a custom brace
❓: Transpose? I mostly like the range & chords as-is...
❓: Git gud (build muscle)? Unreliable: I sometimes pause for months, & this is about my max

@alexglow difficult to say what will fit you, but 3D-printed PLA shapes are easy to bend under boiling water or a hot air gun. See some models here.

My kids used such things a few times already.

@bonkers Ooh, awesome!

I've used that technique to create jewelry before, but never thought to apply it to prostheses. Thanks for the links!

@alexglow You have a really good singing voice! Good control. Sounds like you’ve practiced a lot.

I like the song, too. I hope this comes across as the compliment it was intended to be, but it sounds Radiohead-esque?

@bytex64 @alexglow Was about to say, well, exactly the same πŸ™‚

@higgins @bytex64 Wow! I've been listening to a lot of overwrought '50s/country, and assumed that was 100% the style I was riffing on... but Radiohead is massive for me, and I'm not surprised it shows – though that's a very flattering comparison :D Thom Yorke is wonderfully expressive!

Upon re-listening, I'm gonna try and lean further toward "YOLO" and less toward "oh noooo" in future takes πŸ˜†

*edit: maybe it's the hand cramps coming through πŸ˜…

@higgins @bytex64 FWIW, Green Day have an excellent modern take on the genre :3 https://youtu.be/KRUWOjOVJf0

@higgins @alexglow Oh nice. :)

Yeah, I think it’s the vocal range, the movement from the sad growls to the high notes that feels very Thom Yorke to me. Though now that I know what you were going for I see that too.

@bytex64 @higgins Oooo also, here's another one I love in that vein:

That heavy reverb & melancholy vibe really do it for me! Obviously there are limitations to acoustic guitar + voice, but I've got a couple local friends who might collab :D

@higgins @alexglow Oh that’s lovely. :)
@alexglow @bytex64 btw, I have played guitar for many years, those hand cramps, it is just practice. You can probably improve your technique (guessing you are angling your wrist to much) but in the end, practice. With practice you will realize there is a reason for using capos :) or just tune your guitar a semi-note higher

@higgins @bytex64 Hah, I appreciate the intention, but you're assuming a lack of experience :/

I've been playing casually for ~20 years, off & on... but even when I play for 30+ minutes almost every day, a long run of Fs will cramp those muscles – so I want to find a workaround that will let me play the songs I love, even if I haven't touched the guitar in a couple months (which isn't implausible).

As for the capo, I have it on fret 3 for this song & 6 for the other! I love the tone it makes.

@higgins @bytex64

The experience thing is probably surprising – but it doesn't bother me that I'll likely never be at pro level... I'm just aiming to enjoy it, express myself, & vibe with friends~

The other thing here is that I'm trying to practice building adaptations and prostheses, as part of a lifelong goal :) Hopefully I'll get old someday, and I'd like to have those skills handy!

@alexglow @bytex64 I did indeed, making an ass out of me :-) sorry about that.
