I have had the awful task of having to upgrade my very old mobile phone, as they are in the throes of dismantling the old 3G network.

Apart from screaming into the ether, my necessity is to degoogle the cheap replacement Android phone, as a priority. Now, this isn’t my primary phone, just a standby, but it still needs all that telemetry, data tracking and invasive apps as limited as possible. Bye bye Tik Tok, LinkedIn, Facebook etc etc.

Once I am sure that is as locked down as possible, I will be installing a different browser, messaging app, VPN etc. And try to make sure it doesn’t suck my account credit to nothing, with surreptitious mobile data use. And I will try my very hardest to not have to log in, to do updates. If I do need to, it will be logged out and the account “forgotten” as soon as I am finished.

Wish me luck. I hate having to upgrade technology that still works 🥵😫

Working reference has since been found, although I hadn’t quite finished by the time I found it:

@AdminKirsty My buddy just got a Pixel phone and replaced the installed Android with Graphene. He loves the privacy it provides and that he gets granular controls about what apps and do.

I finally tried GrapheneOS on my Pixel, and it's the secure Android alternative I've been waiting for

My only regret is not installing it sooner.
