I've added full alt text for the cartoons. Didn't mean to antagonize anyone, but I do get the feeling sometimes progressive and inclusive people tend to call out other people who try their best (most of the time) in a way that I sometimes find less than helpful (on of the general problems of the left; we tend to be really harsh with each other).

A pity to see this happen, while all mean well I assume, vigilance has its downsides unfortunately… there are in fact limits to human communication and misunderstanding happens easily.

The essence is the cartoons that show a part of what is wrong in the world and we all acknowledge i guess… such strange times we live in…

Then again, writing good (alt) texts is also an artform, so we have this tag #alt4you to help you or anyone else get help from complete strangers who bizarrely like doing that and are good at it.

I noticed that the original posts on the cartoonmovement account have comprehensive alt texts.

I have found quoting very useful for sharing images with their original alt text although it would mean having to make 4 posts in a thread instead of a single one.

It would be nice if alt text was a part of the image format and stayed with it when saved and re-uploaded but that would be a huge fix

Looks like there is a feature request to read alt text from image metadata if it exists and also to populate it on download but it has not had any action in a bit over a year:

@gbargoud That would help, except that in this case I also run the Cartoon Movement account (and write the alt texts for the cartoons posted there); these 4 cartoons weren't posted on the CM account.

@royaards I was a member of my local Labour party in the UK at the height of the "Socialist Worker/Militant" period.

These two groups basically agreed on almost everything, except which newspaper they read.

I remember sitting in local branch meetings while representatives from the two factions argued over the tiniest of differences of policy.

Perhaps also a lot of us here live in places where our opinions are not heard. So the reactions you get here could be harsher than you might expect.

I try to do comprehensive alt texts whenever I can, but they do take a lot of time, time I sometimes don't have during my working day (and it's not like social media provides any income...)

if you want more alt text:

1. people provide it cheerfully, they are helping

2. the person suggested the alt text appreciates it

3. then next time they remember to do it themselves

if instead there is harassment of the poster, they don't do alt text

instead of just complaining, why don't you do that
