Ditch Discord! In early March, Discord will begin age verification for all users world-wide. This is a violation of your freedom and privacy!

Consider one of the following alternatives:
www.stoatchat
www.matrix.org
www.signal.org
www.rocket.chat

Talk:Ditch Discord! - Beyond40 - A Free Software Caucus

This is the Ditch Discord discussion page. Think of it like a forum of sorts. You can post updates, questions, comments, suggestions, or even just interesting links...

Beyond40 - A Free Software Caucus
@freesoftwarecaucus #Zulip is also a great option for FLOS communities to #ditchDiscord ( #ditchcord ? )
#communityManagement
Stoat - Find your community

Stoat is the chat app for friends and communities that finally works the way you always wished it would.

@freesoftwarecaucus Fuck matrix/element, they are cop supporters!

There's also #Movim, which is actually pretty nice foss alternative to dirty shitcord.

@freesoftwarecaucus uhm. Jabber exists. And for Discord use cases, even IRC. Hell, IRC is probably the best option.
@mirabilos @freesoftwarecaucus doesn't the nature of IRC make it poor for widespread mobile adoption? Mobile is going to be where the majority of platform growth originates from.

@zoness @freesoftwarecaucus that sounds like corporate drone speech, and I disagree both on the mobile and on the need-to-grow parts.

(And yes, it works on mobile devices, I used IRC on a Windows Mobile 6.1 PocketPC successfully as well. Long as people can actually type, it’ll do great.)

@mirabilos @freesoftwarecaucus I don't think its "corporate drone speech" to want a platform that is easy to use; and I don't think citing an operating system from 2008 proves anything about usability on modern mobile networks. IRC requires persistent connections is intolerant for the average mobile network. This is hard for clients too because if that connection drops you get no message playback unless you have a bouncer which regular people are not going to use.
@zoness @freesoftwarecaucus maybe go back to whatever bluesky you crawled out from
@freesoftwarecaucus So that's what it is. Someone I followed said Discord blew up. This must be the problem.

@freesoftwarecaucus Forgive me for pointing this out, but we might have to rule-out Matrix.org because it's based in the UK, and it has been compromised by this push for ID-verification by force of law.

Any online service which is based in the UK, Australia and New Zealand would be subject to this same legislation. Perhaps instances located outside of the Commonwealth would work?

@freesoftwarecaucus Matrix are getting more and more connected to the military industrial complex. And historically has some bad israeli ties.

Its UX are bad - and its a nightmare to host.

More info about matrix: https://hackea.org/notas/matrix.html

and on hackea too; a presentation of #Deltachat which I also really, really recommend.
It takes 30 seconds to try, and doesn't need any info from you: just pick a user name > go!

Matrix? No, thanks. — Hackea documentació

@freesoftwarecaucus XMPP is missing from that list

@freesoftwarecaucus And if you used Discord as a documentation hub or support forum without any fancy chat features, consider a bulletin board or @zulip !
