@astrid This truck can help me with that, right?
@astrid AAAAA - me reading this
@astrid I’m so sorry, A and AAAA are both in current usage.
@astrid to further complicate things AAAA is also a battery
@astrid i promise this isn't loss
@astrid
It can't be DNS.
There's no way it's DNS.
It was the batteries.

@astrid AAAA - Also a battery

9V batteries contain 6 AAAA batteries

@kwayk42 that little factoid about 9V batteries (usually) being nothing more than six AAAA batteries in a trench coat will never not be mind blowing to me.

@astrid

@sysop408 @kwayk42 yea ... not always

@astrid is there any easy way to tell which ones are or aren't without ripping apart a 9V battery?

I actually didn't even know AAAA batteries existed before I learned about this. I found an old 9V and tore into it as soon as I read about it and that one was indeed made from 6 AAAA batteries.

@kwayk42

@sysop408 @astrid @kwayk42 I learnt it when looking for batteries for MS Surface Pen. I searched throu all these stores until...
@astrid @sysop408 @kwayk42 More like, never?
Inside a 9-Volt Battery

Here is what you will find inside a standard 9V battery... 6 AAAA wired in series!

@sysop408 @astrid @kwayk42 oh wow, TIL...
but seriously, packing cylinders like that should be illegal. This is basically maximising the amount of air you can sell to a customer.

@nettings it's packed really tightly in there. The question I have is how it even makes sense economically to do that.

@astrid @kwayk42

@sysop408 @kwayk42

Huh. So 9V batteries are _actually_ batteries!

@mattdm yeah that brings up so many questions. So few things use AAAA batteries that most people don't even know they exist.

On the other hand, 9V batteries aren't at all uncommon yet manufacturers will often make 6 AAAA batteries first and then use those to make a single 9V? Wouldn't it be more efficient to make the 9V directly and make fewer AAAA's?

This has been bugging me ever since I learned this.

@kwayk42

@mattdm I'm not sure what I was supposed to be seeing in that article. Would it make more sense if I had a subscription to read the full article?

@kwayk42

@sysop408 @kwayk42

tl;dr The manufacturing process for making layers of things in rolls was already well-established for other things. Now even more so, so there's not any real incentive to retool for something else.

@sysop408 @mattdm @kwayk42
The chemistry gives 1.5 volts. To make 9 volts, you need six cells in series anyway, though you could use other methods to separate them.

@leeloo ah! OK, now I've got the opposite question. If they're doing it like this because of the chemistry, how do the ones that don't use 6 AAAA batteries do it? Are they just making 6 flat cells packed into a rectangle instead of cylinders?

@mattdm @kwayk42

@sysop408 @mattdm @kwayk42
Interesting question, the people who have taken those apart would know.

I'm pretty sure lead acid car batteries put plastic walls between the cells (that chemistry gives 2 volts, so also needs six cells for the 12 volts).

@leeloo @sysop408 @mattdm @kwayk42 yeah, six flat cells. in another branch of the thread someone posted a photo: https://infosec.exchange/@astrid/116045181097859309

Oh. I saw the photo, but didn't realise the stripes were cells
@leeloo that went over my head too.
@sysop408 @leeloo it's six little plastic tubs glued together. A long time ago I cut one of those open myself, saw the same thing, was confused, and looked up the patent number on the outside of the case
@kwayk42 @astrid A is of course a battery size too, albeit a more uncommon one. Any joke involving DNS is still funny!

@jalager OK, I had no idea the single A battery was a thing.

Also, it's really funny that this battery is apparently so uncommon that they didn't have an actual photo to use on the Wikipedia page for battery sizes so they just drew a 2D representation of it on a piece of graph paper.

I used to have a flashlight that took 4.5V batteries that were actually three A cells in a bigger box. Unlike the 9V ones, which are quite hard to dismantle, these had a top that was very easy to pop off and so you could see the wiring inside.

I've never seen an A cell anywhere outside of these ones, but when I was young you could buy the 4.5V ones in most hardware stores. I haven't looked for one for a very long time, so I've no idea if that's a good thing.

@sysop408 @kwayk42 @astrid Indeed! I THINK I remember them being around in Sweden in the 80s or 90s but I can't swear on it. I'm sure I haven't seen one in decades though.
@astrid Conspicuous lack of andouillette
@astrid But, both A and AAAA are also battery sizes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_battery_sizes

@MatthieuLemerre i dont get it

@astrid AAAA is also a battery! Very uncommon but you can still get some if you know where to look for em! 9V batteries sometimes have six cells slightly smaller than AAAA inside of them, too.
@astrid @dragonarchitect I just had to look up what all uses AAAA batteries and found out Amazon sells them and they're commonly used in tablet styluses from what I can tell from the reviews

@astrid @dragonarchitect @Startide

Old school pen lights, too. You get a good pen sized feel with these, while AAA (and AA) are too big

@dragonarchitect

And "A" was a battery size, big honker used in tube radios.
