I've never tried it, but I know a few plant dyers who swear by madder root

Not plant, but a natural dye is cochenille. That I've tried and I love the color but it can be a bit more purple than red.

@FanCityKnits madder root is quite appropriate given the purpose of the yarn!!! Might even need Maddest Root! To get vibrant angry red shade.
