Each province and territory in Canada has its own legal structure regarding insurance, and I cannot advise about any region but #britishColumbia.

In #BC most personal auto insurance is through the #ICBC, which is owned by the province. If you borrow a car from a family member, and there is an insurance claim, the claim is covered. There may be a penalty if you are not a 'listed driver'.

There is an optional 'unlisted driver protection' which is free for the owner, and they can call their insurer to get it added. It is free until there is an unlisted driver claim; future insurance **with the unlisted driver protection** will have an increase in cost.
