I’ve been reading “Challenger” by Adam Higginbotham, and have spent the last few days either angry, or in tears. Often both.

My only disappointment with the book is some confusion about temperatures, using mostly Fahrenheit and (I suspect) occasionally Celsius.

And when the author says that “the 26 degrees was less than half of [the 53 degrees] when Discovery narrowly escaped tragedy the year before”.

Really shouldn’t be using words like “half” when measuring in Fahrenheit…

“Almost exactly”.

This winds me up. Is it “almost” or “exactly”?

Well that was an excellent read… I’d recommend it if you’re into the history of human space flight.

And I now have a new favourite astronaut, Barbara Morgan. She was backup for Christa McAuliffe in 1986, and flew in a chase plane for the landing when Columbia was lost in 2003… yet she still persisted and flew on the Shuttle Endeavour in 2007.

Absolute balls of steel. What an inspiration!
