I chose Proton ( https://proton.me ) there are others.
Then I set up a NAS system, and ditched cloud services

That's great, I found the transition to be easy.
I still have my Gmail account, as some of the services I use are still attached to it, but I've been reducing/moving these services at a rate of 2 or 3 per week, as time permits.

I'm sure you've thought of it already, but just in case you haven't when you move the account or service, change the password, to enhance the security.
