For years as the newspaper industry was dying, I would simultaneously think, “Those poor people. Who’s going to watch out for local government corruption!?” And, “Thank goodness I have the Washington Post.” Yesterday they gutted the Metro Section, and I cancelled my subscription. Now I’m one those poor people. The devastation is just dawning on me.
@Spacehistory I was thinking about writing a letter to the editor to talk about zoning legislation in Virginia and then had to pause and think “what editor?” Most of the people I know who read papers read the NYT or the Post.
@Lyle In DC, the mayor and the Congressional Delegate are both retiring. Plus someone is challenging the City Council Chair. I have no idea how I’m going to find information I can trust.

@Spacehistory

For me, the Washington Post died when Bezos stopped the Harris endorsement.

It was clear then that journalistic principles and reader interest were irrelevant, only his political goals.

This latest round of firings is just another death rattle.

@TCatInReality I don’t agree with you. The Post was dead when he took it over, and he revived it. But he hired people who didn’t know how to grow a news organization. They cared, but they were not business people. The red ink piled up, and something had to give. The New York Times has made the transition from old to new. The Post couldn’t figure it out.

@Spacehistory

Bezos could run the Washington Post as a loss-making operation with just a hour's worth of his annual income.

You may not agree, but to me it is a clear reflection of his priorities.

Same as his changing the editorial policy of the paper to promote capitalism.

Disclosure: I was a long time reader and subscriber to WaPo...until the day he tanked the endorsement.

@Spacehistory Yes! It's a horrible shame. (The whole affair is many horrible shames.) Now, I hope you're getting right back up on that horse and pushing some other important news sources that HAVEN'T yet been driven into the ground by ultr-rich assholes.
