The @curioss open gathering day is starting now with @claredillon giving an amazing openning!
Academic #OSPOs are very different to comercial ones, for examole, companies don't have libraries, or academics would follow rules 😅
next of @curioss event is @sarahnovotny telling about the intersection between #OpenSource and #AI.
It's beautiful to learn how each of us have become involved with open source. In the case of Sarah was through #mySQL 🐬
LLM as 🦜🦜 Stochastic parrots - brilliant - that it's our responsability.
Amazing presentation by @sarahnovotny where between many things recognises the privilege we have to be called global citizens (the slide with the globe had only 40 unique flags 😕)
> Many companies don't agree with the @osi licenses, because they are a community agreement without a legal basis.
> But companies call #OpenSource things that contain #EULAs that stops accessibility

That doesn't sound right. I attend an annual open source conference also attended by corporate counsel for the largest corporations and none has expressed that opinion. The licenses submitted to OSI for approval have to be legally reviewed before they are considered.

@osi @sarahnovotny

my point was more specifically about open washing. e.g. Llama being announced as open source with no expected repercussions even though it did not fit the spirit or definitions.

@webmink @dvdgc13 @osi

@sarahnovotny
Ah, OK, we certainly disagree with Meta falsely calling Llama open source https://opensource.org/blog/metas-llama-license-is-still-not-open-source

@dvdgc13 @osi

Meta’s LLaMa license is still not Open Source - Open Source Initiative

At a time when Meta is trying to redefine Open Source for their own benefit and at the expense of our freedom, we call on the whole Open Source community to unite and call out Meta’s open washing.
