Wireless Intracortical Visual Prosthesis (#ICVP) without intracranial cabling: Feasibility study results after 3 years https://lnkd.in/eER34XuY by 26 authors. #WFMA = wireless floating microelectrode arrays. #BCI #NeuroTech #blindness #neuroscience "Counterintuitively, pausing camera-based stimulation during more than half of each second improved performance." "Although not creating complex form vision, visual function results exceeded those of other cortical visual prostheses to date" "Participants needed to learn how to differentiate electrically elicited phosphenes from their visual noise." [...] "repeated correlation with the click *sounds* helped Participant 1 recognize that the phosphenes were not random flashes. For Participant 2, repeating stimulation trains three times, with corresponding *audio* cues, permitted identifying phosphenes as electrically elicited." Single-electrode thresholds of Participant 1 (average ± standard deviation): 29 ± 12 μA (5.8 ± 2.4 nC/phase). Participant 2: 18 ± 8.2 μA (3.6 ± 1.6 nC/phase). "Participants preferred stimulation current set to 200% of threshold" "Participant 1's collection and processing of visual information required slow head scanning and careful deduction." For participant 1: "Following the first seizure, maximum total stimulation from each WFMA was limited to levels used extensively for earlier electrode analysis: 30 μA with each of a WFMA's 16 electrodes, 480 μA total, for any given train." [...] "This did not prevent Participant 2's seizures, although it may have limited their potential severity."
