Hey fans of *The Ark* television show, last week’s Saturn Awards nominations include a the show’s second season in the ‘Best Science Fiction Television Series’ category.

There’s stiff competition with *Andor*; *Star Trek: Strange New Worlds* and the Apple triumvirate of *Foundation*, *Severance* and *Silo*.

Nonetheless, the nomination attests that this lower budget, often cheesy new take on the oft-used Ark-ship concept continued its improvement throughout its second season.

It’s relative ratings success and enthusiastic fans in the target youth demographic also demonstrates that there’s an audience for shows that feature young people coming together to overcome obstacles and uphold aspirational values against an arguably dystopian backdrop.

Its success may in particular bode well for Starfleet Academy.

The Ark’s continuing improvement also makes the case that fans of other Dean Devlin ensembles including *The Librarians* and *Leverage* may find it worthwhile to check out if they haven’t already.

@AlsoPaisleyCat @thearkchat Oh, do you mean "cheesy" as funny or as just low budget? Looking for something new to get our teens watching as a family and at least sometimes funny is required. Thanks!

@trini @thearkchat

The low budget is definitely a factor. The youthful relationships as well as some of the science and engineering is where things get pretty cheesy at times. Socially awkward young scientists are definitely a point of humour.

There are some predictable plot lines and scifitropes, but as it goes on it charts its own path.

Production is being done in Serbia and the production design is definitely gray on white on gray-white.

Definitely recommend for family viewing. There’s nothing I would be concerned about watching with even younger teen/ or middle schoolers. One of our older teens who likes anime and animated shows is watching it with me now and hasn’t cringed out.

@AlsoPaisleyCat @thearkchat I'll give it a shot soon then, thanks! But just for reference, Foundation was a pass because it was just too serious, but Slow Horses is great because while serious has both funny and dark humor to it.

@trini

It’s not at the level of Apple productions by any means.

Not a dark humoured show, and is actually quite earnest.

It’s on a model where there’s a big issue each episode but a strong overarching narrative and character development.

The first half season is the weakest. It they enjoy that at all, they’ll like it increasingly as they go on.

@AlsoPaisleyCat

I hope this means we get a season 3. 😃

A third season for The Ark was definitely greenlit by Syfy in March 2025.

Production started early July 2025. This MovieWeb article embeds a post by Syfy with a clip of the actors who play Lane and Garnett on the set.

While there has been no official announcements since, Deadline included The Ark in its late November 2025 listing of renewed shows. Deadline is fairly reliable in having the latest industry which suggests there’s no suggestion that the third season won’t be broadcast.

However, distribution has become complex with NBCUniversal splitting Syfy from its streamers Peacock in the US and Universal elsewhere.
