A colleague picked my brain a little about digital sovereignity. What about the lower levels of the OSI stack?

Can you call it sovereign if data between end-user and datacenter is transported via US, or other foreign controlled, infrastructure? Which is a rhetorical question. Network infra is not my forte, but I am sure other people smarter than me have already thought about this.

@Dany
Infrastructure and fiber is often quite interchangeable between various providers and locations. But I will rethrow your question if you want in the #nlnog group. Or perhaps @koen already has an answer here on the fediverse?

@axel @Dany

That is actually a nice question. With @ProcoliX we take a very extreme standpoint there. Which is why we are moving out of non-EU owned data centers and we have not engaged with non-EU owned transit providers for example.

There is some nuance to make there. For example: you can use optic cables (fibers) that are owned by some EU owned company just fine, Tapping into a fiber connection after is was already delivered is very noticeable (it involves cutting the connection temporarily).
