- Fediverse: open infrastructure for independent, public‑interest social media
- smaller reach, but higher engagement than big tech
- biggest gaps: UX, onboarding, and moderation that normal people (not just us nerds) can handle
- chance to build algorithms around diversity, transparency, and info quality
- public media should spin up their own servers to gain digital sovereignty
