These are the tools powered us during the complete internet shutdown of Iran. I don't know how to appreciate you guys. Thank you:

- @matrix
- @element
- @delta
- @nextcloud
- @ntfy
- SchildiChat
- @torproject
- Psiphon
- a huge number of VPN and Proxy apps I can't name one by one.

💯 This is what open source is about - empowering people and freedom. Glad I could contribute a little bit to this! 💪

@mohammadrafigh @matrix @element @delta @nextcloud @ntfy @torproject out of curiosity, did you make use of Meshtastic or other mesh networks that are not on the internet? I think those would be quite useful when government shuts down communications. Stay safe!

#meshtastic

@cos Generally stuff that doesn't run on commodity hardware is much less accessible and therefore useful in these kinds of situations

@JadedBlueEyes these things are very cheap, starting from 9€ per node.

I know that in Portugal's power outages they were useful when cell phones stopped working. But yes, they need to exist before the crisis happens. Now it's too late to put orders in.

@cos @matrix @element @delta @nextcloud @ntfy @torproject

No unfortunately those need a lot of nearby devices to be usable at large scale.

@mohammadrafigh Is 'snowflake' one of those belonging to your last bullet point?
@nachtigal
Yes I can actually just connect through Snowflake in Tor on my laptop.
@mohammadrafigh Great, then I contribute as well a little bit...
@nachtigal
Ow it's your kindness, thank you. ❤️❤️
@mohammadrafigh From what I understood, the recent/ongoing shutdown was at least at its height, an actual shutdown -- not just throttled traffic, or anything. So are these tools that you managed to run solely on the national part of the Internet? I think at least @delta chat could be run that way, i got from reading https://techhub.social/@abbas_dp/115924794576948449
@quite @delta
Yes exactly we used Delta chat and Matrix for safe and secure messaging.
@mohammadrafigh ah also Matrix! so self-hosted matrix homeservers in the country? I wonder how you deal with dns for all this (and in general more tech about the setups :)
@quite
I think there are a few Matrix instances I'm not sure about it, because we are not publishing a list of the instances for obvious reasons. But I'm pretty sure there are a lot of instances of both are running and people are inviting each other into different instances to get ready for next possible international internet shutdown (which might be soon). We use dns providers in Iran or some specific whitelisted international dns.
@mohammadrafigh If you have insights, would you say that during the height of the shutdown (flat-line on netblocks.org) was there certain traffic still generally allowlisted, let out? Like dns? Or was that generally also not possible.
@quite
Nothing at all on first week, after that occasionally just google.
@mohammadrafigh I suggest looking into qaul.net for some mesh networking fun
Don't forget to install Snowflake!
@martindrogat
Yes, on Linux there are Snowflake extensions for Fx, Chrome, and even M$ Edge.
@mohammadrafigh
Is there a need for Signal proxies? I just set one up. Feel free to contact me for the address.
