Don’t sell heritage like #VictoriaBarracks for budget small bikkies. For flats and a cafe? To save “up to $100 million a year in maintenance costs”. Instead think of that as an investment in heritage. And, instead, raise more revenue so 3 tiers of government don’t have to be constantly scraping by. #AusPol #AusEcon #heritageAU

@david_coombe_cbr I get the desire to hang on to this military heritage. It's truly important. Unfortunately we just don't need it as a defence property.

I'd say if we do need to sell it, why not mandate some function/use criteria? A museum for the barracks at least, and low-cost housing for poor people, maybe even veterans.

We can dispose of military land without handing it to the richest of the rich.

The $3b figure for it all is kind of offensive, knowing how much just the barracks are worth

@sortius thanks, all good points

@david_coombe_cbr cheers. I try not to look down on selling defence land (still waiting on Maribyrnong!), and, if anything, if they can work a veteran housing situation into it, it's perfect for access to hospitals on the other side of the grid, and specialists along St Kilda road.

Would be nice to see the RSL lobby the government for something like this

The dud AKUS payments so far are more than this
