Ongoing climate pollution means that cities around the world are struggling with longer, hotter heatwaves. These heatwaves are lethal, particularly for more vulnerable people who might be older, have health issues, or be unable to access our afford air conditioning.

There's a lot we can do at the local government level. We already have policies against bricking over verges or using plastic turf, and our sustainable building guidelines encourage people to leave more space for greenery. Our urban forest strategy is also a big part of our approach to lowering the temperature.
I'd like to see us develop a heat safe city plan, with a more holistic and comprehensive approach to helping people stay safe during heatwaves.
