Today I made a MakerTube account and uploaded one video to try it out. I 've only used YouTube for my videos before, so I'd appreciate any advice about settings, description content, etc., before I add anything more.

Thanks!

Well, so far my MakerTube account is not operating the way I thought it would. I can find it by typing my name into the Mastodon search box, but it says there are no posts, even though I have one video uploaded. I selected the "open original page", which takes me to MakerTube, where I see the video. But there's no "boost" button. Do I need to copy the URL into a Mastodon post? That doesn't seem very "federated".

#Peertube

@Anne_Delong I went to your channel and got your @ and searched for it on Mastodon and I see one video called "Darlington Reel".

@Mrfunkedude

Thanks! When I did this earlier, it didn't work. I'm not sure what made the difference - maybe just time.

@Anne_Delong if you followed your #peertube account AFTER you uploaded your first video, you won't see that in #mastodon ... it works a bit like #rss where you will only see new posts AFTER you subscribe. Is that a possibility?

@lps

Yes - but on Mastodon you can boost an old post from another server and it will federate to your own server. Is that not the case with PeerTube? I guess it makes sense if it takes up too much server space.

@Anne_Delong

"but on Mastodon you can boost an old post from another server and it will federate to your own server."

"Is that not the case with PeerTube?"

Peertube is not Mastodon

If you boost an old [Mastodon] post on another [Mastodon] server it Federates back to the original [Mastodon] server -- given enough time

But there's nothing intrinsically to push it outward to any Peertube server -- at least not automagically

The problem is really that the buzzword "Federation" has taken on too much importance without anyone explaining what it means in practice

"Federation" is a very general abstraction, not a networking reality

@Anne_Delong could you share a link to your channel?

@andijah

Sorry, rookie mistake. I fixed it now!

MakerTube
@Anne_Delong you could add tags and also a description.
Otherwise peertube is like any part of the fedi. Channels grow organically. At least that's my experience.
Share links to channels and videos when you've uploaded something new.
You can also follow others from your peertube account and subscribe to their channels.

@andijah

Thank you for noticing that! I had filled out all of the fields with descriptions and tags, etc., but somehow none of it was saved, so I did it again.

@Anne_Delong nice! I have subscribed to your channel. 🙂

@Anne_Delong I can't help, but I hope you work it out. I have the PeerTube app, which is supposed to search all PeerTube instances (including MakerTube) but I'm finding it difficult to find content I'm interested in. I've just searched for you by name (assuming you use the same name as here!) but couldn't find you.

I'd like to quit YouTube, but I find it's hard to discover new artists and musicians on PeerTube.

Maybe I'm not using it correctly?

@Anne_Delong Actually I found you by searching directly on MakerTube. Maybe the problem is with the federated search.

@quietsnail

I hadn't thought about the federating issue. Maybe the account was too new, but now I found it in the Mastodon search by just typing my name, and then followed myself. I've got some followers, so maybe that will help get it started. Thanks for looking.
