Understanding what makes a social platform a community isn't straightforward. I'm very far from a sociologist, so I'm probably not the right person to ask, but as we look at growing the Social Web I think it's an important question. How do we help platforms become more?

Everyone wants a village, but nobody wants to be a villager. Most want to inhabit a bubble without problems, rub elbows with like-minds, and stroke their ego. While their is value in moderation, being a villager requires the understanding that technical burps happen, problematic people exist and will knock on your door all day, and your ego will take hits daily so better to employ humility. Growing a platform means the makeup of people need to adjust their expectations.
