Researchers are building an interactive data set and map that documents the growth of data centres in the United States and elsewhere, and lists their costs, power outputs and owners

Edit: there is scepticism that EpochAI present any data independently, especially when it comes to environmental damage, see https://mastodon.online/@NatureMC/116006686837888884

Frontier Data Centers Satellite Explorer

See how satellite imagery, permits, and public disclosures are used to track the power capacity and performance of frontier data centers.

Epoch AI

@kim_harding Pay attention! These "researchers" are a company, a so-called research institute, #EpochAI, working for business: https://epoch.ai/about - and the bad boys!
They are more interested in benchmarking than in the truth.

I am extremely sceptical that they present any data independently, especially when it comes to environmental damage (couldn't find anything).
It stinks of one of these #lobbyism "institutes"! It stinks very much.

Damn... I literally cannot think of a worse "trusted by" list.

@lavenderjamie It's why I always check the sources even before boosting something. My déformation professionnelle as a journalist. 😉
I hope that @kim_harding will edit her post.

@NatureMC

This is a bit further off topic but everyone ought to preform due diligence before posting, boosting, or otherwise endorsing anything that is said.

Thanks for reading into it for us :3

@lavenderjamie It's not always easy, often you have to dig hard.
In this case, the map looked neutral, like a beginning (no European data centers), even like an open source project (because they use Open Street Map).
You have to find the back button at the top on the left because the map has no link to an impressum. Then you have to check their content. It takes time. Not everybody takes this time.
