Today I learned about the cube houses in Rotterdam!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cube_house
@weirdestate Well, I know we both follow the same llama.
@weirdestate ong these are amazing
@weirdestate they remind me of this old short story https://homepages.math.uic.edu/~kauffman/CrookedHouse.pdf Definitely wouldn't go inside
@weirdestate
I see why you put your desk there, as it's way too easy to fall out a window.
@weirdestate They’re quite incredible. One is open to view for a few euros and there’s a hostel block if you want to spend the night.

@weirdestate They're not in an area I visit regularly, but they always catch my eye and my mind always wonders about how much custom furniture they probably need.

One went for sale last year for €450k, which is rather affordable for its location.

Edit: "affordable." House prices have gone through the roof in the last decade or so.

@weirdestate @timsev the custom furniture was supplied with the house AFAIK
@wishy @weirdestate I didn't know that! It makes sense though. Even if owners have placed custom furniture, it'd still make sense to sell that to the next owner because I doubt it's going to be of use in any other home
@weirdestate I think I like the original cube houses in Helmond even more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAjLps5wBkg (English subtitles available)

@anji @weirdestate

A crazy number of stairs. Impossible to heat or cool. Everything is inconvenient. Floor cabinets are tiny. Top shelves are almost inaccessible.

He just flat out says that it's hard to live in the thing.

"The total area of the apartment is around 100 square metres (1,100 sq ft), but around a quarter of the space is unusable because of the walls that are under the angled ceilings."

So it's quite small.

@weirdestate interesting design but seems utterly awkward to actually live in
@weirdestate fancy desk. I wonder how much they spent on custom furniture to fit the walls
@Laukidh @weirdestate Yeah, my first thought was where do the bookcases go?

@weirdestate

Crikey!

In Australia some councils won't allow anything other than the standard double fronted all look the same hot and cold boxes ...

@MyView Yep - I'm in Sydney. SO many boring houses!

@weirdestate

Yeah ... can't even have a blue one or a yellow one ...

@MyView @weirdestate Rotterdam is fun. Like a lot of European cities a large part of it got totally destroyed in WW2, but unlike the others they decided to get crazy with the architecture when rebuilding.

At least, that's the story I read when I backpacked there a few decades ago

I've been in to visit the cube homes. I think they're just an exhibition now (or at least one of them is). I remember there being a lot of wasted space, due to rooms having sloped walls. Interesting to look at, and fun that exists, but I wouldn't want to live in one

@Hyperlynx @weirdestate

Nor me ... always fancied a round house though :)

All rooms opening from a central living room with each room having an external door in case one needed a quick escape ... or entry into one room :)

@Hyperlynx @weirdestate @MyView How about a round house... that also rotates? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gisdyTBMNyQ
I thought this rotating house was impossible.

@thomastc @Hyperlynx @weirdestate

Wow! Yes please!

The things he had to do!

Necessity really is the mother of invention ...

@weirdestate ah yes, the logical way to stack cubes
@weirdestate @jalefkowit yeah, they’re interesting, but… I would not want to live in one. We toured one in like 2001, and they made for weird spaces and little privacy.

@weirdestate let me tell you about the “ball houses” in Den Bosch

@weirdestate three of these can also be found in the city of Helmond
@weirdestate this is just a very old stuff... they were around since 1980s. Unlike in other countries, Europe tends to preserve anything, which was once iconic (compare to USA or Japan...)

@weirdestate when I was in Rotterdam last year I had to swing by this area. There’s rival groups of people offering tours but I got a bad vibe from them all so instead just walked around them.
They are close to the Markthal, a street food precinct inside an arched residential building and surf school on a the Steigersgracht canal.

What Rotterdam lacks in the old-Dutch charm of Utrecht and Amsterdam (because it almost ceased to exist during WW2), it makes up for in uniqueness.
(Edit typo)

@WhombeX wow those are some great photos, thanks for sharing
@weirdestate I have seen them. They are weird! We need more weird in our lives
@weirdestate visited these a couple years ago. They're iconic, but in terms of the actual space you get the footprint:usable space ratio is just terrible.
You've got a really awkward stairway for the entrance, the lounge area at the top is like a greenhouse, super hot and of course no air conditioning to manage that. These kind of suit a single person, perhaps surviving for a bit when a partner moves in.

@weirdestate

Been there! Love #Rotterdam!

Their Central Market (Markthal) is also incredible!

@weirdestate I love the look, I think it's super-interesting that they exist. But I suspect the admirable city-planning priorities could have been well served by something less outré.

Maybe we need extravagant efforts to inspire more modest change elsewhere.

@weirdestate oh yeah, those are always fun
Had a blast visiting there

Rotterdam is full of interesting architecture. Rarely two buildungs look the same.

@weirdestate

Reminds me of the cube house in Toronto which sadly may soon disappear.

Our real estate market is so unhinged that the land for the cube house sold for about half the cost of the Roman convent property you just shared.

@weirdestate there is also an organization in there that re-integrates into society ex-convicts.
