With so many blatant omissions, I'm often surprised when an #emoji turns out to exist.
e.g. ⚗️
@quincy
The list of denied/refused #emoji is long and sometimes mysterious
Why did they refuse that? Why hasn’t someone proposed something else?
https://unicode.org/emoji/emoji-proposals-status.html
@LonM @quincy
They require stats on word prevalence with web search data, which gets less and less accurate as search engines sink into AI goo
But #Emoji that people actually use aren’t words you normally search for
The next 😂 “Face with tears of joy” isn’t gonna prove its worth with word search rankings
Everybody wants to propose objects like 🪗 or fave living things 🪼
But folks use emoji like metaphorical emotional punctuation, not word replacement
Unicode needs new tests
@LonM @quincy
We tried to emphasize metaphorical uses of the image in the #PhonographEmoji proposal they denied 😔
How it would be used in text with examples where people had asked for it and substituted other things online
You never know why they turn things down
Might have been that there was a Grammy Award emoji on Twitter (they sold emoji for $1 million a week)
It seemed like a pretty strong proposal

@LonM @quincy
The rejections are a black box. Yes/no. With no comments or explanations
Unicode’s #Emoji Subcommittee makes deliberations in camera, so it’s somewhat understandable that they don’t share how the decisions were made I guess
But it is annoying, especially because you can resubmit proposals something like three years later, and if you don’t know why they were rejected, you have no idea what to change to improve them
@AccordionBruce @quincy That'd be a hell of a way of finessing the warship issue! 😹
I'm surprised no one has submitted a #kaleidoscope emoji!
@FritzAdalis @quincy @catsalad
I think they did the polar bear #emoji after they got five proposals 🐻❄️
It’s gonna be hard to do another dragon with wings when they’ve already got two without them 🐉 🐲
The ethnic roots of #emoji lean hard to Japan, the US and Europe so it’s not a global mix
Any time things get too culturally specific there’s complications
The whole system is a kludge. Remarkable it’s been so popularly adopted
