Had a lovely time at the beach with my Ukrainian family. The little one dragged me into the water with a couple of big water pistols, & older one enjoyed hurling a ball back & forth. Fish & chips were a bit slow & finding some shade to eat in was a challenge, but it wasn’t too hot. Busy, but not horribly. One family turned up with a big Aussie flag & a boxing kangaroo flag, & everyone just looked…

Few people get carried away with celebrating “Australia Day” here, & many of those who do are white supremacist racists.

It commemorates the day the British proclaimed the colony of New South Wales, a penal colony and the beginning of the end of a traditional way of life for the Indigenous people. (Or life at all, sadly, for many.)

We really need a different day, and one which is relevant to all Australians.

@Susan60 Think you may be right Susan,but after the voice was defeated,I do wonder where we are going,we arnt responsible for the past,but it needs to be recognised and respected for what it was

@Philipnschofield
I wrote an essay in response to this, not to attack you, but because I had some stored up angst to release. And lost it because of the stupid iPhone update. 🤬🤯

I can’t be bothered trying to rewrite it here.

It’s not just about the past. It’s about generational trauma. One generation passing on their trauma to the next, via abuse, or helicopter parenting etc. And the descendants of perpetrators trying to pretend nothing is wrong, & minimising that trauma, all while adding to it with discrimination & victim blaming.

@Susan60 @Philipnschofield @Su_G it’s also important to grapple with that the ongoing impacts of how Australia has treated Indigenous people aren’t just psychological trauma (which is real and serious) but have tangible implications that extend into the present. For example, part of why poverty is more common in Indigenous communities is a horrific history of Indigenous workers being subjected to underpayment/stolen wages, sometimes near slavery conditions so there often hasn’t been the ability to grow family financial stability. Efforts to make recompense for that have been incomplete

@joannaholman @Philipnschofield @Su_G

I’ve written 2 lengthy replies to this & them list them when my phone has frozen.

@joannaholman @Philipnschofield @Su_G

If we had a truly caring society & equitable taxation system, anyone in need, regardless of the reason why, would receive adequate assistance. This would break cycles of poverty, substance abuse etc. Some people would complain that we were simply setting people up for long term welfare dependence, but a good system, with enough adequately supported & resourced case workers, would avoid that. People would get a hand up, not a hand out, except in those cases where people are simply unable to be truly independent.

@joannaholman @Philipnschofield @Su_G

Whether people are struggling because of intergenerational trauma, ongoing racism & discrimination, personal experiences of trauma, disability, marriage breakdown, grief etc, shouldn’t be an issue. A caring society looks after people when they need help, & doesn’t let the next generation fall through the cracks.

@joannaholman @Philipnschofield @Su_G

And a caring society doesn’t structure their taxation system in a way that allows anyone to become a billionaire, or anyone to become wealthy through the provision of essential services.

@Susan60
Also true. The fetish for the private sector!! 🤑Why can’t we move on? Time & time again we learn through bad experience that the private sector provision of essential goods & especially services, has to be regulated, monitored, & experience consequences when it does the wrong thing. Perhaps when all that is added together, in some ‘Social Economics’ or ‘cost benefit analysis’ that actually includes all the externalities, it will be found to be a more effective use of public monies to offer services through public sector structures. 🤔

Oooo now I feel I’m ranting!!

😁

My phone keeps freezing. I’ll write a treatise and then lose it. Has been happening since iPhone update. 🤬

@Susan60
Great! NOT! Sorry about that. I won’t let mine update… since I read so many bad things about iOS26 update… apparently it’s not being taken up by many. Hope you can get it fixed. 🙏🏻

@Su_G

I refused the first few times, but then I must’ve hit yes accidentally. At one point, the phone would only update overnight when plugged in. This time it wasn’t plugged in.

@Susan60
I live in fear of update. ☹️

@Su_G

Hasn’t been a problem before. My phone has still got some life in it, but I will reconsider my options when I’m in the market for a new one.
