Hmmm.... Let's see... (a thread)

LDP: "consider a two-year suspension of the 8 percent consumption tax on food products."

Keyword "consider." And only two years, you wouldn't want poor people to be able to eat too much...
Also, this nonsense of raising the consumption tax was Saint Shinzo Abe's idea, and it's taboo to say he did bad things.

Japan major political parties' election pledges on key issues - The Mainichi

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The following are key campaign pledges made by major Japanese political parties for the House of Representatives election on Feb. 8.

The Mainichi

LDP: "strengthen defense capabilities, adapt framework to the severe security environment."

I honestly don't think about this. Yes, Japan, devoted to peace, blah blah blah. But in this day and age, having a strong military may not be a terrible idea.

LDP: "invest in 17 strategic fields, including artificial intelligence and semiconductors and space, to spur growth."

Ah, the good old Showa mentality that technology is the key for Japan's strength. ⤵️

It hasn't happened in 30+ years, but it's crazy the number of Japanese people who still think technology will fix everything forever.
When is the last time a Japanese company invented something that revolutionized the world? Was it the DVD?

Also, fuck AI.
Next:

LDP: "address concerns over the foreign population with stricter rules and measures to promote cohesion."

Oh fuck you LDP. Foreigner residents are the cause of absolutely none of the problems that plague #Japan today, but you need a scapegoat, especially to appease people who are tired of over-tourism, that you, the LDP pushed for.

Fuck you.

#Japan

LDP: "increase transparency of political funds."

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That's rich coming from one of the most corrupt party I have seen in my life.

Alright, next, the new "Centrist Reform Alliance".

"cut consumption tax to zero on food products from the fall, financed by a new government-backed fund."

Kill the consumption tax on food should be a no brainer (in all countries btw) but I'm not sure what they mean by "government-backed fund" Do they?

⤵️

CRA: "uphold Japan's longstanding non-nuclear principles prohibiting the possession, production, or permitting the introduction of nuclear weapons"

Nothing new here.

CRA: "abolish retirement age, introduce four-day working week system."

Wot? I guess it's too attract the votes of people older than 65 and who still want to work. What about those who want to retire? Will they be able to? (now, I may have to work past 65, yikes!)

⤵️

"Four-day week system."
I'm all for it, but the devil is in the details. For the same paycheck? For how many hours a week?

"create a system to allow couples to have separate surnames."

About time, no?

"toughen rules on political donations from companies, organizations."

A no-brainer, hoping it's for real and not just PR.

Now, the lovely Japan Innovation Party:

Now, the lovely Japan Innovation Party:

"establish "second capital" system in sites such as Osaka to back up Tokyo in emergencies and decentralize power."

I mean why not? I don't care much either way, but the day Fuji explodes, it's going to be "interesting" with everything centralized in Tokyo.
Is it realistic, though? Isn't it a ploy for the party to just gain more power?

⤵️

Japan Innovation Party:
"pass bill to cut the number of lower house lawmakers by 10 percent in the next Diet session."

I don't know why they're so obsessed with this. I feel that the only goal is to increase their power on the national scale (and reduce the power of the two main parties).

Finally the DPP:

Finally the DPP: "raise take-home pay further by raising the income threshold for residence tax"

Will it not only increase the pay of only homeowners? Do renters pay that tax too? In any case, it sounds sketchy. Lowering a tax is not the same as raising salary, especially on the long term.

"cut consumption tax rate to 5 percent until sustainable positive real wage growth is achieved."

Indeed.

⤵️

Well, I guess that's all.
As always, Japanese political parties are as vague as possible with their promises. This time they all seem to want to cut the consumption tax (once again raising it was Abe's stupidest policy, but we're not allowed to criticize him postmortem apparently) so maybe it will happen.

Otherwise, let's hope the LDP loses and we got rid of fascist and xenophobe Takaichi.
