In the episode I got the cue from, it also discussed probabilities & Poisson distributions to model a rare event. This weekend in North Carolina, the weather got us staying home, & this morning I woke up to the sound of ice & sleet.

"Extreme winter storm warning" is what the weather service rated this for the region. A rare event indeed for this area, and that's the kind of stuff (rare events) you use the Poisson distribution for.

Armed with that, I needed to incorporate the Roland TB-303 (a clone of it, really) and some field recordings. I figured I'd tackle the easiest part first: go outside and record the wintry mix coming down. I ended up going back out when there was a break, to record myself walking in the snow.

Next, it was time to do something with the 303. With the field recording, I was thinking more in terms of some electroacoustic music. That meant using some FX & a modular or semi modular. I still had the Behringer Neutron semi modular out from another track earlier this month, so I wired the CV out of the 303 to the CV in of oscillator 1 of the neutron, sent both oscillators to my Purple Ring ring modulator.

I wanted to contrast the very electronic sounds (which include synth chirps to go along the real birds chirping in the field recording) with some acoustic / electro acoustic sounds. I set up the multitrack recorder, and got some real percussions and an electric bass to come in and out during the whole music recording.

I then did a pre mastering with annotations and final mastering from the multitrack recorder to a stereo pair.

This was quite a fun thing to make and I think a live gig with a real drummer and a bassist would be fire.
