#ThisWeekABC's Jon Karl to #Mamdani:

"You're a #Democratic #Socialist. NYC is known as a center of global #Capitalism. Do you want it to remain that way?"

NOTE TO JON KARL: CAPITALISM ISN'T A FORM OF GOVERNMENT. There are a LOT of "Capitalists" in China.

@MugsysRapSheet

Correct; capitalism isn't a form of government. It's an economic system, like socialism is.

@AlexanderKingsbury
WRONG, #Socialism is NOT an "economic system". It is a form of government. Period.

It's the understanding that there are some things that belong to society as a whole... like *public roads/highways*, *public parks*, *public libraries*, police & fire dept.

All a feature of "Socialism". ALL established in our #Constitution and/or by the Founding Fathers.

@MugsysRapSheet

Ah, I see. You're another one of those "make up your own definitions" sorts. Oh, well.

@AlexanderKingsbury
🙄

Okay toddler, I'll explain things to you like you're a T**** supporter:

A government doesn't have to be "Socialist" to have "socialist" polices any more than China can't engage in Capitalism.

@MugsysRapSheet @AlexanderKingsbury hey so maybe we should chill and try to not call people toddlers over semantic differences. We're all frustrated and scared and lashing out, but remember who our actual enemy is, because they haven't forgotten.

You can categorize socialism (as in "public control of the means of production") as an economic system, or as a form of government, or both. In the end, and I can't stress this enough, whatever definition you use really doesn't matter. All that matters is taking power away from the oligarchs who are trying to kill us all, and giving it back to communities so that maybe we can actually be a democracy for once.

@zrb @MugsysRapSheet

The definitions we use absolutely matter. If we are going to use language in order to communicate ideas, what words mean is crucially important. Otherwise, candle octopus apple tree brick generous? Tine pillow soil pebble garden hail. Groceries?

@MugsysRapSheet @AlexanderKingsbury
Is this your understanding of socialism?

You’re correct that principles of the American revolution, the idea of inalienable rights, necessitates moving away from capitalism.

However, doing that doesn’t consist of the government doing stuff, but restructuring the firm to be controlled by the workers.

@jlou
No. As I already explained above, it's the idea that there are things that belong to *everyone* in a society. That includes common universal rights (such as health care.)

England "socialized" their coal industry over 100 years ago (IIRC) b/c they decided the nation's coal was a natural resource that belongs to everyone (unlike the U.S. which sells off mining & drilling rights to the highest bidder, effectively forfeiting Billions in resources before knowing what it's worth.)

@jlou
(con't) No one would call a park or library examples of the government "doing stuff".
