PLEASE BOOST.

Hi Fediverse! I'm 46, and am just starting out on my goth journey(you're never too old to start a new thing-don't let anyone convince you otherwise😉). Looking for some recommendations for goth bands to listen to, and figured here was a great place to ask! Please comment your faves below. Thanks in advance😁

Rue Oberkampf

RUE OBERKAMPF is a genre-defying band that blends darkwave, electronic music, and a haunting aesthetic, captivating audiences worldwide. Their music is a journey into the depths of sound and emotion, drawing inspiration from the darker sides of life and art. With a loyal fanbase in the goth scene, they continue to push boundaries with each new release.

@BowieSpace You don't mention what you're already familiar with, but it doesn't hurt to start with the classics. So, if you haven't already, try Sisters of Mercy. There's a superb "best of" called "A Slight Case Of Overbombing". "This Corrosion" and "Lucretia, My Reflection" are stone cold bangers.

@BowieSpace Welcome to the dark side – we have cookies. ;)

I like old EBM like pre-2000 Skinny Puppy or Die Form. But also the New Wave / Dark Wave classics like Pink turns Blue etc.

@BowieSpace @viennawriter I like EBM and electro-industrial too, and skinny puppy is one of my favorite bands, though i wouldn’t consider those genres goth
@enby_of_the_apocalypse @BowieSpace Well, back in the mid 1990 when I started going out to goth clubs it's what they played there. And back then there was no "I'm gother than you" attitude, which came later in the early 2000s with more genre splitting and more we against them instead of having fun evenings together. So I consider them goth anyway, because I'm not playing along in the splitting game.
@BowieSpace
Obviously there's all the classics, but for something new you could try Raven Numan (daughter of Gary)

@BowieSpace I’d like to suggest two #Mixcloud livestreaming shows from Northern Germany: the weekly show #gothdiscoinferno by @bauhausmensch and #DunkleEchos by @thorsten
Both shows have created nice digital campfire-communities and I (re)discovered awesome bands through both shows. Micha always provides great context information about featured bands during the livestreams. A good place to discover #goth #postpunk #coldwave etc. bands. 🦇
THOPAN

THOPAN is on Mixcloud. Listen for free to their radio shows, DJ mix sets and Podcasts

@BowieSpace The Silence Industry, Grundeis, Rue Oberkampf, Vioflesh, there are sooo many!

@BowieSpace Other folks have recommended a lot of the classics, but if you want to hear the current stuff I recommend the Communion After Dark podcast.

@BowieSpace London after midnight is one of my faves.
@BowieSpace saw Christian Death live at Whitby Goth weekend and they were amazing! Well worth it if there's any shows near you.
@Research_FTW disabled, under the poverty line and in Australia so I'm not sure about that, but will definitely listen to the music at home🥰

@BowieSpace
I tend to like more upbeat Goth music - my favorites are:

The Sisters of Mercy - favorite album is First and Last and Always.

The Cult
Siouxie and The Banshees
The Mission

@BowieSpace I started out in the mid-80's so listened to a lot of the classics like Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, The Cure. Those are some cool places to start!
@BowieSpace I'll try to put together some recommendations for you, and after reading through the suggestions by others, you're already in good hands. Goth music is so … comfortable.
@WTL I appreciate you! Thank you so much🥹😁I'm excited about this journey!
@BowieSpace I discovered goth music late in life too; I missed it entirely in the 1980s, and discovered it in the 2000s. If you're an Apple Music user, I frequently will play this list: https://music.apple.com/ca/playlist/goth-essentials/pl.0f96a26bd3404897bc4e9c6273a8aae8

@WTL ahh, it's so good to meet someone else who discovered it later on! Thank you for sharing with me! I don't use Apple unfortunately, but I appreciate the gesture🥰
@BowieSpace You *should* be able to see the songs on that list and look them up wherever you do listen to tunes.
@BowieSpace I saw a lot of great recommendations, but didn't see Switchblade Symphony. Late 80's early 90's goth rock. Tina Root is pretty awesome.

@BowieSpace there is so much to explore!

Bauhaus, Siouxie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, Christian Death, Clan of Xymox, some of the Cure albums are goth-ish like Disintegration. Fields of the Nephilim, Dead Can Dance.

@BowieSpace welcome (to the dark side)! 😁 🖤🦇

@BowieSpace
I'll hold off on posting a long list of band names, because, as you may already have seen from some of the replies here, a lot of very different musical subgenres can be called 'Goth', or played out at Goth clubs or on Goth playlists, streams, etc.

In some groups of Goth people (for example, at a club night or with DJs after a live event) some of the 'Goth' music that gets played will be loved by some of the people and hated by the others. And vice versa, 5 minutes later.

(1/2)

Some of the weekly clubs go to the effort of posting their past playlists online:
http://www.deathguild.com/playlist/

That club is in San Francisco, but the music played at it comes from all over the world, and across time.

Audio from some of the recent Death Guild nights can be streamed, for free, courtesy of the people who run @dnalounge

@BowieSpace At the 'Leeds guitar goth' end, Sisters of Mercy and The Mission are a great foundation. For the 'London batcave', then Specimen are great. And of course, for elder post-punk, there's Siouxsie and the Banshees.
But other more modern(ish) bands of varying sizes (many of which are on Bandcamp, if not elsewhere) include The Last Dance, Rhombus, The Cruxshadows, Gothzilla, Witch Of The Veil, AlterRed, DeviantUK, Deine Lakaien, O Children, Frenchy & The Punk, Rosetta Stone, ...
@BowieSpace ... Last July, Covenant, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Bolshoi, Killing Miranda, March Violets, The Screaming Marionettes/The Marionettes, Mesh, Depeche Mode, Shriekback, Dyonisis, Jordan Reyne, Johnny Hollow, Nitzer Ebb, Zeitgeist Zero, Abney Park, The Cramps, Fields Of The Nephilim, Screaming Banshee Aircrew, Rome Burns, The Young Gods, Inkubus Sukkubus, Still Patient?. Hope you like some of them!
(OK, some of those are bigger bands I forgot to mention earlier.)

@SimonLandmine @BowieSpace
The "Leeds Guitar Goth" sound spawned a lot of soundalikes, not all of them from Leeds. One band that really stood out musically was Cristabelle Children from Cardiff (Wales). Their name is sometimes misspelt as "Christabelle's Children".

This is one of their strongest songs, from a 1990 vinyl EP that they recorded in London:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YMytglJVSW4

They toured the UK with Christian Death.
It's a pity they weren't more successful.
