@thordis Xennial here - on the cusp of millenials and gen X
@szczurtorebkowy Yeah, I'm right on the cusp too, born in 1981.
@thordis @szczurtorebkowy Xennial for life! 😉
@goleztrol @ritual @FuturisticRobert @dfx @thordis @szczurtorebkowy 1979 checking in. Just wanted to say you are all pretty rad. Carry on.
@rdp @goleztrol @ritual @FuturisticRobert @dfx @thordis @szczurtorebkowy I’m born 1983 and I can only identify culturally (tv, movies, internet tech) with a limited set of Millennials, but I’m too young to appreciate a lot of what Gen X appreciates. It has felt for several years like I’m stuck between two generations, so I think Xennial applies to me as well.
@thordis my brother was born in 1980, Gen X. I was born in 1981, Millennial.
@szczurtorebkowy

@Tattie @thordis @szczurtorebkowy Both Xennials. (As am I)

I prefer “Oregon trail generation”, but that just redirects to the link below.

Xennials - Wikipedia

@Tattie @thordis @szczurtorebkowy I've always thought the generations start in the middle of the decade since the baby boom began in 1946. Back in the 90s when they started calling us Gen X, in the metrics I read a generation was defined as a 20 year period and Gen X were born from 65-84. But then it changed to cultural periods instead and they shifted the bar so now it's only 15 years between the current young generations. Like our parents are only 15 years older than us!
@szczurtorebkowy @thordis
Same, young for a gen X, old for a Milennial
@szczurtorebkowy @thordis Same here, very late Gen X but my life has more in common with Millennials born just a year or two after me.
guess you're looking for the term Gen Y oO
@szczurtorebkowy @thordis also seen us called "the lucky ones" and "the Oregon Trail Generation"
@Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis how are we lucky?
@hosford42 @szczurtorebkowy @thordis ostensibly it's centered around us being born into a totally analog world that still played outside all day without supervision and movies and TV had production values still and there were Rolodexes, but then we were still young enough for the flip to a digital society to be able to implant itself in our lives in a way that the Lead Paint Generation and Gen X was just a little too old and inelastic for. Some of them could, but not overall.

@Clem @hosford42 @szczurtorebkowy @thordis

That's funny, cos that description is almost word for word the standard description of Gen X, apart from the bit at the end.

But hey, us GenX-ers are used to having our experiences misappropriated - when we're not being completely ignored/forgotten, of course. It's the other main generational cliche about us, apart from our endless snark and weary cynicism. 😉 🤷‍♂️

@imalcolm @hosford42 @szczurtorebkowy @thordis it's not all your fault, you guys got the tail end of the lead paint just like mommy and daddy, they just had to breathe it at the same time from leaded gasoline fumes
@imalcolm @Clem @hosford42 @szczurtorebkowy @thordis exactly! Im a very early gen Xer and ive worked in IT since before i finished uni. No idea where this concept comes from (ie i know plenty of people from every generation who have no idea how to fully use their tech :) )
@imalcolm @Clem @hosford42 @szczurtorebkowy @thordis (i may have misunderstood this post. I assumed it was a general fediverse question, as it got boosted into my feed, but i just noticed it came from a forkiverse post, so, as im not even there, my answer doesn’t count)
@Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis I don't feel lucky. I feel like I'm watching all my hopes and dreams be torn down for good, just as they were about to finally be within reach. The stuff I worked toward my whole life... I worked toward it for nothing. All the angst, trying to be good enough for my parents and then my children, only to find out it was pointless because it doesn't matter what I do or did. The world has turned to a giant dumpster fire, and I don't know how we will ever climb out of it.
@Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis Sorry, that was really effing gloomy and I shouldn't drag other people down with that talk.
heads up mate! better days will come. you're not alone 🫂
@hosford42 @Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis Well, looks it's time to be try see the things more optimistic way, man. Or at least sarcastic :D
@The_ERROR @Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis Or maybe from another country
@hosford42 Where are you from?
@The_ERROR Texas. One of the most fascist states in the fascist US.
@hosford42 @Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis this encapsulates what I consider the defining feature of us xennials.

It's not as simple as technology - I spent large amounts of my single digit childhood on a 48k Spectrum, while many of my peers barely touched a computer until late teens.

It's more about us living on the edge of a cliff. We are the tipping point between GenX who could reliably do the career-house-kids-stability thing, and Millennials who had that future ripped from them. Whether any individual of us managed to cling onto the cliff is largely due to chance.

@jetlagjen @hosford42 @Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis

me and my hand-me-down TI/99/4a computer agree with you!

Chance has a lot to do with it.

@hosford42 @Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis

how are you doing fellow Xennial? Take care yourself. I'm where you are right now and I sometimes have to pull away from it all and dive into something completely unrelated to the world around me. I've watched most of my friends and family struggle. It is bleak right now and I'm not going to sugarcoat it. It is very scary.

But you're not alone. Stay strong. Once history turns over again, we'll be needed to help with our unique insights and wisdom as children somewhere between two arbitrarily defined albeit unique generations.

Apes, together, strong.

@FuturisticRobert @Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis

First I have to survive. I have lost my job *again*, at the worst possible time *again*. I have no savings, because I used them all up last time I was laid off, and didn't get the chance to build them back up. I don't even know how I'm going to feed my kids tonight. And the job market is *destroyed* for people in my field. (Non-LLM machine learning) Add the tariffs and the oncoming economic downturn they're projecting, and we are screwed.

@hosford42 @FuturisticRobert @szczurtorebkowy @thordis there's always money in the banana stand chk-CHK

Edit - I should explain. I wasn't trying to be trite about your situation at all even though it looks like I clearly am in retrospect. That was more pointing out how generational wealth breeds the inability to notice others struggles. If you always have a banana stand in your family, you don't have to worry about the day-to-day of people without a banana stand

@hosford42 @Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis

Oh god I’m sorry. I don’t think there’s any corporate IT job out there that’s safe from LLM AI and it’s snake oil peddlers.

Do you have a paypal or anything like that? Also check around your area for mutual aid. I’m rooting for you.

@FuturisticRobert

I do. The info is all here, for anyone who can afford to help:

Hey, folks. I hate doing this, but my family and I need help with money for food & gas. This is unfortunately going to be a regular request until I can get a new job. (See my pinned posts for my resume.) We average about $35/day for food (2 adults, 2 kids) and $10/day for gas, if we are being cheap. Dog food is $22/week. So we need around $335-$340 to make it through the week, making sure everyone is fed and gets to school. Any help, however small, is deeply appreciated. Please boost for reach! And remember, you can unboost and boost again to keep it visible. Week of Feb 9: Progress: $13/$340 (food/gas) I just wanted to add: Thank you, to the community, for keeping us fed in this difficult time. If you happen to have paid odd jobs that can be done remotely, I'd be happy to take them on. Please DM me with details. I'm skilled with automation and machine learning. https://paypal.me/AaronHosford https://account.venmo.com/u/Aaron-Hosford-42 https://trocador.app/anonpay/?ticker_to=eth&network_to=ERC20&address=0x65f0c6a9f137e301e43bdbecec6eb28de2a440e4&donation=True&simple_mode=True&amount=0.0&name=hosford42&description=Donation&[email protected]&ticker_from=eth&network_from=ERC20&bgcolor=00000000 #MutualAid #MutualAidRequest #Food #Transportation #DogFood

@hosford42

I sent you a little something and boosted your referenced post for reach. Take care of yourself, and hang in there!

@hosford42 @Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis

I an feeling I never even got the chance in the first place. Graduated in 2009. Zero jobs my entire life. Felt like I crawled out from this mentally ill hole I fell in and now well im yeah deeply feeling we have lost everything. Im autistic… was a special ed kid who benefitted a lot from changing policy allowing me into mainstream classes and required I have a qualified teacher and nothing much since.

@Energetic_Nova

We autistics have the lowest employment rate of any disability group. The way jobs are allocated is fundamentally dependent on neurotypical-style social interactions. We strike many neurotypicals as "off" somehow because we don't move or talk or think like them. I think we hit the uncanny valley, basically. And because they often make their assessments and hiring decisions on "gut feeling", that incongruous signaling is enough for us to be passed over...over and over and over.

@Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis

@Energetic_Nova

I've been the lucky exception in that I can *sometimes* seem NT enough to pass the exclusion tests.

@Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis

@hosford42 @Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis

I answered “not a leader” even though I was captain of knowledge bowl and president of anime club

@hosford42 @Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis

I was captain cause the hummingbird motions. Its hard to believe I have ended up in states of being where I dont move at all.

@hosford42 @Clem @szczurtorebkowy @thordis

I move like a hummingbird. But not like they would know with all the online application and no interviews… I think its cause I graduated from a special ed class… cause they can know that. And even knowing they could pay me sub minimum… they still wouldn’t chance me.

But I at least understand why people think Im on drugs when I saw myself on security footage next to a normal married couple… they moved line penguins. My hummingbird flapping surly…

@Clem @hosford42 @szczurtorebkowy @thordis If it works for you that's grand, but do note I'm the most Gen Xy GenX you can get (born in '73 so right in the middle), and at age 20 I was busy writing web sites and fiddling with all the early 90s 32 bit protected mode operating systems..

(and playing DOOM, naturally).
