Another meeting in Chester, NY this evening about the enormous ICE detention facility being planned for that village.
New details: the warehouse ICE plans to use is owned by 47’s buddy, Carl Icahn. Suppose he’d make some $$ from the deal?
Also: apparently ICE is asking for public comment on the project (2 whole days—deadline is Jan 16). I will track down the URL in case anyone wants to weigh in.
Tonight the room held about 80-100 people, ranging in age from 18-86, all of them white. About 10 people gave comments, all firmly against the detention center. The town supervisor has a firm position as well.
However—there is also the (realistic) expectation that the feds will be the 2-ton gorilla in the room and do as they please.
What I wasn’t aware of was how widespread the organization against it has gotten. More counties and groups have joined the fight…..
Several state and federal officials were mentioned as being against the facility—can they prevail?
We’re hoping Gov Hochul will use her clout as well.
I don’t know when a final decision will come down, but when it does, I suspect ICE will move fast, like when they built Alligator Alcatraz. How long did that take, a couple weeks?
