@paulox @standardebooks I got hold of one of their books just yesterday to use as an example when formatting my own. They're fantastic for seeing how an EPUB should be put together. https://mastodon.sdf.org/@DamonWakes/115815463821260762

Attached: 1 image I'm happy to announce that Apocalypse Now, my anthology of stories from Flash Fiction Month 2025, is now available(ish, as it'll take a while to reach the various storefronts). I'm less happy to announce that this involved figuring out how to manually create an EPUB on New Year's Eve, as Draft2Digital no longer seems to recognise my standard manuscript format. https://books2read.com/u/3ylNRe #book #FlashFiction #FlashFictionMonth

@paulox @standardebooks I love Standard Ebooks!

I watch a few of their RSS feeds and download a few books a month to my eBoox app.

It never ceases to amaze me how interesting and relevant many of these older stories are to modern times.

Especially nice that Amazon is not involved in this process in any way!

I just got a Boox but am still in the figuring out how to use it phase. Been in the kindleverse too long.

@paulox @standardebooks

Standard Ebooks does have a few gems of science fiction. Andre Norton, H. Beam Piper, and John W. Campbell

@nyrath @paulox @standardebooks if you want to see more of them you can just filter on the science fiction genre: https://standardebooks.org/subjects/science-fiction

(I’ve got another Harry Harrison in the pipeline.)

@paulox @standardebooks before it turned out to be performance art marketing, I supported Horse_Ebooks!

Won't get fooled again, man...

@paulox @standardebooks Agreed - any #PublicDomain repository will get the job done, but Standard #Ebooks product is consistently beautifully-formatted and contains noticeably fewer errors. And the site is a pleasure to use.
@paulox @standardebooks @kboyd Highly agree; I started using Standard Ebooks after someone suggested it here. Excellent work!

@paulox
Following them now.

Have used Project Gutenberg and Calibre previously, to download onto my ancient Kindle. Always good to have another source.

@standardebooks

@paulox @standardebooks Thanks for sharing!  Will look into this!
@paulox @standardebooks Isn't this what Project Gutenberg already does?
@standardebooks @wendyg from the website:
“Ebook projects like Project Gutenberg transcribe ebooks and make them available for the widest number of reading devices. Standard Ebooks takes ebooks from sources like Project Gutenberg, formats and typesets them using a carefully designed and professional-grade style manual, fully proofreads and corrects them, and then builds them to create a new edition that takes advantage of state-of-the-art ereader and browser technology.“

I believe Standard eBooks does more work formatting the ebooks they provide. Also, last time I looked for something on Project Gutemberg I only found a .txt file for what I was looking for, the .epub format provided by Standard eBooks is a lot more ergonomical for use cases like mine, reading on different devices. Regarding just the availability of material, I'd suppose Project Gutenberg has more stuff available, if only for the less amount of work involved.
@kaioviski @paulox @standardebooks It probably varies by title. The last things I looked for on Gutenberg had multiple formats available, including ebooks. It's really a wonderful resource - benefits from how long it's been operating.
