a beautiful (calm and slightly melancholy) #BrassBand piece with solo euphonium that i found yesterday.

tormod flaten plays the second (= slow) movement from "euphonium music" by brian bowen, accompanied by the leyland band, conducted by russell gray.

Six minutes of calm and yearning music.
Very lyrical euphonium melody. Melancholy, not quite in a minor key for a longer time, but with yearning turns of phrase, and some minor chords providing some colour. I think some modal progressions.
Very soft tone. The band accompaniment is very sparse and soft too. Especially the basses, they are incredibly gentle. They almost sound like strings sometimes, and the flugelhorn and cornet almost like flutes and clarinets.

Musically, some bits remind me of early 20th-century classical music, or of a certain type of old BBC-ish period film soundtracks.
Actually sounds like it could be a string quartet. The ending isn't open, but also not really final – the third movement is meant to be played immediately after.

The album cover for "From the Deep" shows Tormod Flaten on a round cliff, holding his instrument upside down, with the bell towards the ocean or a lake, as if it's listening to the water. He's young and serious, and wears glasses and a coat.
