Well, this seems like an interesting project. Either that, or a wild overreaction to middle click paste being off by default.

Either way, though, I have to ask: what's with the name? How is that pronounced, and what's the etymology? I tried looking it up and have had no luck. I know it sounds like I'm taking the piss, but I swear I'm not.

Oh fuck.

gNOme
gYESme

I just got it.

That's …

Look, I try not to be negative so I'll keep my opinion to myself. Except to say that if I use how we pronounce Gnome (Guh-nOme) as a guideline, I can't say Gyesme out loud without feeling rather foolish. And if I leave the G silent, I'm just agreeing with someone (Yes'm) not talking about a DE.

@cocaine_owlbear ouch. Didn't have high hopes for this project, but having such an insulting name kinda defines my attitude to this project going forward.
It'll be interesting to see what happens with this project anyways. It's got way to much hype for literally nothing, but a vague document about not being a fork of something you can't really modify without being a fork.
@cocaine_owlbear I've been trying to figure out how to pronounce it or what it even means for two days now. Same with trying to figure out exactly how they intend to achieve their stated goals without it being a fork, because... it's a fork. Just not called one, semantically.

@rolandixor I made a reply to my original post when I figured it out, but to sum up:

gNOme
gYESme

Still no clue how to pronounce it.

@cocaine_owlbear @rolandixor I only manage if I effectively pronounce gnome as if I were saying Genome. So like G-Yes'm
@cocaine_owlbear I think it's a combo of multiple things, the tighter systemd coupling seems to be another factor, which is a bit more understandable.
Seems nice for the BSDs or non systemd distros to have somebody do the work for them, for the average user I doubt this will ever mean much as the average user will be satisfied with the systemd coupling
@Isofruit oh I can totally see the purpose of the project. I just thought the timing was funny is all.
