Oy, guess I'll put this out there. This is a #song I wrote many years ago called Safer. It's about how the perceived peace of suburbia covers up the violent colonialism underlying it. Whipped up this production in about 4 hours yesterday.

Welcoming constructive feedback about #songwriting or #musicproduction, especially basement studio stuff. I need to clean up vocal recording, f/ex. I need to put some padding on my walls, probably, to decrease echo and tinniness?

I have never been satisfied by sequenced drums before. They always sound fake. I tried to get around that here by making every bar of the drum part unique, as though a human were playing it with small improvisations throughout. I mostly like it this way, but some of the individual sounds (the big splash cymbals near the end) start to sound samey. I should probably search around for some better samples and probably play with the sequencer's humanization, panning, and velocity somewhat.
Also tried something a little odd: I kept the #RhythmGuitar simple, chords strummed with my favorite chorus pedal turned on, but played the entire bass part as a guitar solo with some compression and fuzz. Being a guitarist primarily, I've never bothered writing basslines for any of my songs. Improvising seemed like the right thing to do. Turning the #BassGuitar into the lead voice was a lot of fun.
The more I listen to this, the more I find that the parts I was more confident in yesterday are the parts I like least now. The chorus needs to either go away or become more wavery so it doesn't just sound like my guitar is out of tune. My singing is awful. I'm truly sorry for that. I will have to retake that entirely.
Needs another run through the last progression at the end, too. I feel like the song earns its release and should enjoy that just a little longer.
