“Donald Trump and his Cabinet, and the Congressional bloc enabling this behavior, have demonstrated, repeatedly and unmistakably, contempt for law, for constitutional constraint, and for the values that have historically shaped American conduct abroad.”

Venezuela Shows the Danger of Power Without Restraint: Presidential Authority, Assumptions of Good Faith, and the Breaking Point

A Statement Following the U.S. Military Operation in Venezuela

“Checks and balances only function when the actor being checked believes in the legitimacy of the system itself. They require not just institutional capacity, but constitutional faith.

This president does not have it.

And that, not merely the legality of any single operation, is the true crisis now confronting American constitutional governance.”

@BohemianPeasant Uh, no, checks and balances check and balance when the actor tries to pull shenanigans. With "constitutional faith" you don't need checks and balances, they just do the right thing on their own.

What's the crisis now (and has been for quite some time) is the USA's checks and balances suck. They were created to make rich people richer, and we can't keep doing this. It's not a good system if only the Right People were in charge. It's a bad system.

“Is there no virtue among us? If there be not, we are in a wretched situation. No theoretical checks, no form of government can render us secure. To suppose that any form of government will secure liberty or happiness without any virtue in the people is a chimerical idea.” #JamesMadison

@BohemianPeasant Exactly, the Founding Fathers were kind of idiotic.
