#BostonWeekend 5x Oh, hi, its a new year. I'm Knizer. For the past few years, towards the end of every work week, I survey the local arts and culture scene listings. There's always a lot going on in #NewEngland, and I try to summarize the highlights and add hashtags for discovery. I do this on the fediverse as a passion project, because the local arts scene gives me life, and deserves to be highlighted in a non-corporate social media space.
Build the community you want to see, nurture this garden, we will make it work here in time. Please boost the top of the thread when you see it, as there's no algorithm. And when you think of it, tell someone that you found out about a cool event on this thread.
Onward to more events worth the trip.

Help the Eliot School kick off our 350th anniversary celebrations with Sew Many Mittens—a community service event where we will create 350 pairs of mittens out of recycled wool to provide warmth and comfort to those in need during the cold winter months. Our partners, Friends of Boston’s Homeless, will distribute everything we create to unhoused people across the Greater Boston area. To make this possible, we need volunteers of all ages and skill levels to help us make mittens—no sewing experience required! Volunteers will enjoy a DJ spinning great tunes, complemented by tasty snacks, warm beverages, and meaningful conversations.Join a three-hour shift or stay for the whole day. Our 9 AM-12 PM shift is already full, and our 12-3 PM shift is close behind, but we still need more sign-ups for our 3-6 PM and 6-9 PM shifts! Register yourself or your group to volunteer here: https://forms.gle/E8bqh5oFdV68Hacf8Can’t make it, but still want to help out? We also need donations of gently used or new 100% wool clothing or blankets (holes are fine) by Friday, December 5. Drop them off at our Schoolhouse or Annex location Monday–Friday, 9 AM–5 PM.

Join us every second Saturday of the month at 1pm to learn more about area and industrial history, engineering, archeology, water access and more from experts in a variety of fields. On January 10, Jeff Keller, organizer of local pub and chantey sings, and his friends are coming to the Waterworks Museum to delight us with an afternoon of songs related to coal-mining, steamships, locomotives, and more. All Second Saturday Speaker Series events are upstairs in the Overlook Gallery. The presentations are free and open to everyone, including walk-in visitors, space permitting. They are part of a pattern of ICE violence that tears families apart, devastates communities, and exposes the failures of systems meant to protect us—especially within immigrant communities. In the face of this violence, we refuse to be silent. We come together to mourn, demand accountability, and call for ICE out of Massachusetts. When institutions fail, our strength is in one another. Join us for a vigil and rally as we honor those lost and stand for dignity, justice, and safety for all. ✊ 📍 Sat, Jan 10 | 2 PM | JFK Federal Building, Boston Learn more and stay connected: lucemass.org".

Compiled by Mothers Out Front MA

Wednesday, January 7th, an American citizen was killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This killing is part of a broader pattern of unchecked violence, impunity, and abuse carried out by federal immigration enforcement agencies against members of our communities. A broad coalition of groups across the country is calling for a coordinated Ice Out For Good Weekend of Action on Saturday, January 10th and Sunday, January 11th to demand accountability, honor the life lost, and make visible the human cost of ICE’s actions. A core principle behind all ICE Out For Good events is a commitment to nonviolent action and no civil disobedience. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values, and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events. All events should be held in public spaces or on public property. Indivisible is managing data and communications with participants. By registering, you agree to receive info from Indivisible about the event, receive communications via e-mail or SMS message from Indivisible, and receive any other updates and opportunities to take action or support ICE OUT FOR GOOD partner organizations. You also agree to have any data entered in this registration collected by Indivisible. Indivisible will treat your data according to our organization’s applicable privacy policy: https://indivisible.org/privacy-policy
