Years ago I was wandering round a graveyard in Durham Co. on a snowy day. Graveyards are easier to transcribe in winter when vegetation has died back. Under my coat I had a tape recorder into which I was reading the headstones for later transcription. To clear moss and snow I had a small brush. Near the graveyard wall I tripped over a branch buried in the snow and in an effort to protect the tape recorder I fell flat on my face. I uttered a few choice words and from the wall heard 'Tut Tut Tut.' I looked up to see two police officers who had been told about a strange man shambling around the graveyard, scrabbling at the stones and muttering to himself. #genealogy #graveyards
The US version has in the past been, "Someone's going through the cemetery with a clipboard, listing the dead people they can use to steal the election!"
As I told my extended family, "I have been that person with a clipboard in the cemetery."
