A standoff between #protesters & #federal agents at the parking lot entrance of the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal building is underway—with agents deploying a #gas-like substance, a CNN team on scene experienced.

In an attempt to move protesters, agents deployed the substance, which CNN’s Ryan Young was on the receiving end of.

As smoke filled the air, protesters could be heard coughing & gasping for breath, in video.

#Federal officers in fatigues, including #BorderPatrol special response teams, are positioned in a line outside the Federal building in #Minneapolis, trying to move #protesters.

While some agents interacting with protesters were seen trying to use deescalation, other agents were heard having conversations antagonizing the protesters, telling them to “bring it if they want to bring it,” & using their body to physically push people down to the ground, CNN’s Ryan Young reported from the scene.

#BorderPatrol agents seen at a #protest near #Minneapolis, #Minnesota, appear to be a mix of the agency’s special response team and its Border Patrol Tactical Unit, also known as #BORTAC.

BORTAC agents are *generally* “trained” in crowd control & crowd dispersion, as well as other tactics to protect property. #PepperSpray & #TearGas canisters are among tools agents have used for crowd control.

Similar #BorderPatrol teams have been previously deployed to various “civil unrest” incidents, including Portland in 2020.

To be clear, this #protest has been 100% #peaceful on the side of the protesters. Only the #federal “agents” have used force.

@PetterOfCats The "border" has been 150 miles within the actual US border for years now--since 9/11, I think. I live in southern Vermont and am somehow at the border. Very frustrating. @Nonilex
