Today is the feast of the Epiphany. The Magi visit and offer their gifts to the Christchild in a 15th Century alabaster at Long Melford, Suffolk. The midwife Zelomi stands behind Mary, while aged Joseph watches from the foot of the bed. Long Melford: www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/Longmelford....
2/3 The Adoration of the Magi, a late 14th Century boss in Norwich Cathedral. They arrive on the right to offer gifts to the Christchild who stands on Mary's bed. Joseph sits in front of the fire in the foreground, the midwife beside him drying the child's swaddling clothes.
3/3 The Adoration of the Magi by Peter Paul Rubens, c1633 in Kings College Chapel, Cambridge. Made for a convent chapel in Louvain, it was gifted to the college by the property millionaire Alfred Allnatt, and installed in the chapel in 1968. Today's the feast of the Epiphany.
@simoninsuffolk.bsky.social Your description of this church is a delight - as is the info that this was buried treasure, rediscovered centuries later under the floorboards. I have just been looking at the enlarged details that you have thoughtfully made available on a click through.
Thank you!
