Fellow Torontonians, do you wish your phone calendar simply showed you whether to put out garbage or recycling this week?

The City of Toronto provides PDF schedules and the (poorly reviewed!) TOwaste mobile app. But if all you want are the waste collection dates in your phone's calendar - without installing an app - then subscribe to one of the calendars or download the iCal dates from Toronto Schedules:

@pkiff nice! Is that your website?

@jerome Heh, yes!

I was adding the dates for my area collection to a calendar just for myself and decided I might as well create calendars for the other areas as well.

@pkiff nice! Just shared your tool with the @CivicTechTO community
@pkiff I'm curious if you've written up how you did this? I've been interested in a similar thing for my city here in India and the website is super scrappy, hard to navigate and uses weird route numbers that only make sense for those in the system. Would love to learn!

@ni_nad It wasn't automated at all, and definitely not very technical!

The city provides PDF versions of the schedules. All I did was open up the PDFs and then add corresponding entries into Google calendars. I created a separate Google calendar for each route. Then I exported the calendars as iCal events. That's it!

@pkiff aha, sweet! If the schedule doesn't change often, that's probably more than enough. I should do the same and have a thing up first, and then look at updating it regularly. Thanks for the nudge!

@pkiff I did this for myself this morning and should have waited; I was lazy about yard waste so I'm now using yours. 😁

Thanks!

@pkiff Cool! Sadly, I have nighttime collection.

@rexbron Darn it! I can probably add calendars for Nighttime schedules this evening.

To be honest, I didn't really understand the who exactly the Nighttime schedules applied to when I looked at the City website. Am I right that they apply to folks living just on specific parts of specific busy main streets? The descriptions are very unclear! And the streets listed are already included in the regular Daytime maps, so I don't understand how exactly new residents know which applies to them.

@pkiff Nighttime collection is for streets that have commercial activity on them, some lots on those streets are residential, and so also have night time collection.

I think the Day and Nighttime collection is pretty much the same but I have never compared to confirm.

@rexbron Turns out that (for 2026 at any rate) the Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday Nighttime schedules are all identical to their corresponding "Day 1" calendars. Monday night is unique.

I've added the residential nighttime schedules to Toronto Schedules now:

@pkiff So awesome, thanks for looking into it!
