We’re ordering new jute rope and want your input. Most jute is processed with JBO (jute batching oil), a petroleum-based oil used to soften fibres. It often leaves a chemical smell and some people prefer to avoid it for skin contact.

Makers (including us), work to reduce the JBO during processing, but this is not the same as rope that never was batched with JBO. JBO-free jute exists but is rare and costs almost double per metre.

Would you pay more for guaranteed JBO-free rope? #39c3 #shibari

Thank you for all of your votes! We are sourcing jute that’s batched with non petroleum based oils (such as soybean) to make a quality comparison. #jbo #shibari
