Chief Justice John Roberts pushes for judicial independence in history-heavy report

Chief Justice John Roberts touted the independence of the federal judiciary as a “counter-majoritarian check” and urged Americans rattled by partisan politics to keep faith with the Constitution.

“This arrangement, now in place for 236 years, has served the country well,” Roberts wrote in the report, which was released by #SCOTUS hours before the start of the new year.

Roberts’ history-heavy statement made no mention of #Trump, nor the intense conflict that has cropped up between federal #courts & the #WhiteHouse since his 2nd inauguration nearly a year ago.

#Trump has questioned the legitimacy of #courts that paused his policies & called for the impeachment of #judges who ruled against him.

Many of those cases have wound up on #SCOTUS’ emergency, or “shadow,” docket, where Trump has often found a more receptive audience among the court’s 6-justice conservative majority.

Many of those decisions have overturned lower courts with little-to-no explanation, prompting sharp & unusual criticism from a few lower court #judges….

#SCOTUS has allowed the #Trump admin in recent months to cancel foreign #aid & #PublicHealth funding; temporarily fire the leadership of many #independent agencies; stop & interrogate people about their #immigration status based on their apparent #ethnicity, #language or presence at a particular location;

& require the sex designation on #US #passports to align with the holder’s #BiologicalSex. Last week, the court temporarily blocked Trump from deploying the National Guard in Chicago.

In all, #SCOTUS has sided with #Trump this year in more than 80% of the emergency appeals filed by the #DOJ.

The court, on its regular docket, handed Trump an important win in June by limiting the power of federal #courts to temporarily block his policies.

In 2026, the justices are expected to decide whether #Trump may end #BirthrightCitizenship through executive order, unilaterally impose sweeping global #tariffs & dismiss a governor from the #FederalReserve based on disputed allegations of mortgage fraud.

This is a big deal!

If the Justices decide that a President can override a constitutional amendment with an executive order, they will have given Presidents the power to override the second amendment and implement strict gun control.

In a #CorruptSCOTUS packed full of cartoon villains, Roberts may be the one who has done the most damage.

It will take decades to restore the US judiciary.

@Nonilex I will definitely read his report. It seems that he has applied the Reump/Orwellian funny mirror to the Declaration of Independence and all it stood for before his SCOTUS ended it

@Nonilex what a joke is right. Praising the Constitution while dismantling it, and praising the "independent" judicial branch while ensuring the branch is fully subservient to trump. Roberts lies like trump lies.

this SCOTUS has been disastrous for enforcing the constitution, separation of power, limiting executive privilege, privacy rights, bill of rights, respect of precedence, LGBTQ+, and almost everything the actual majority of americans want.

John Roberts, the Ginsu CJ, slicing and dicing the constitution and Stare Decisis to fit the needs\wants of the FedSoc, his corporate friends and billionaire benefactors since 2005. He’s one of the worst CJ’s ever. Between him and the five fascist justices they’ve nearly destroyed the wall of separation between church and state and I fear even worse decisions coming… gay marriage, desegregation, birthright citizenship, maybe even Loving Virginia. Lots of work to recover.
