Having a 1 hour+ commute is never worth it. I don't care how much extra money you earn or how many podcasts you listen to on the way. Spending such a significant portion of your life simply going to and from work is a waste of life.
@anon_opin So fucking close to getting it.
@anon_opin @jpm in some European countries the idea of travelling more than 30 minutes to get to work is unheard of (and employers may even be liable for wages above about that time). I think this is a good idea.
@bencourtice @anon_opin @jpm That works in cities of up to about a million. Bigger than that and you're looking at an hour for many journeys.
@mansr @anon_opin @jpm An snthropologist I know argues that about 1 million is the ideal maximum size for cities, based on his lived and professional experience
@bencourtice @anon_opin @jpm I'm inclined to agree. Having spent time in cities of various sizes, I've ended up living in one of about 250k, and I like it here.
@mansr @anon_opin @jpm I grew up in Hobart, about 200k. good if you fit in but for a more diverse social/intellectual scene I moved to Melbourne in my 20s. Then about 3 million I think. Better scene but so vast I never really went to large parts of it. Way too big and crowded now.
@bencourtice @anon_opin @jpm We have two universities and a very diverse population, so the situation here might be a bit different (I know nothing about Hobart other than its location).
@anon_opin I had an hour commute once upon a time. The drive to work was tolerable, but the drive home was always a massive pain.
@anon_opin Define "worth it". I had an 1:30hr commute for about 4 years. It enabled us to move to a bigger home in the county we wanted to live in and I didn't have to leave the career/field in which I wanted to work. And tbh, it set me up for my current role, too. Plus I made up for it with my 30sec commutes for thrle 4 odd years following COVID.
@anon_opin My partner has a 1+ hour commute, but typically only goes 9 1/2 months of the year, and often only 3 or 4 days a week. If we moved closer we'd have to live someone shitty and then I'd be driving further to work, and we can't move in this fucked economy anyway.
@anon_opin
Can be reduced to ten words at the end:
"going to and from work is a waste of life"
Or even six:
"work is a waste of life"
