I need an alternative to gmail. What's a good option for hosting email that supports custom domains? Paid service is preferred to ad supported. Easy import from gmail would be nice.
@joshsusser I’ve been pretty happy with FastMail. Not sure about import though.
@joshsusser I've used runbox.com for years, no complaints.

@joshsusser very happy with Fastmail here
@sstephenson @joshsusser +1 to Fastmail. Been a happy paid customer for over a decade.
@sstephenson @joshsusser Same here. Think I've been a customer for more than 20 years, and I almost never use its web UI. It just works.
@joshsusser Chalk me up as another +1 for fastmail, although I also did not try to import. I preferred to start from a clean slate.
@joshsusser I think FastMail is by far the best product out there. Proton is weirdly limited and feels like a closed ecosystem, others are too "open source" and rather unpolished.
@joshsusser I migrated to Mailo about a year ago and it's been pretty good - stable and well documented.
@joshsusser I'm with Mythic Beasts.
@cubic @joshsusser Same - astounding company, couldn't be happier with them
@joshsusser Fastmail is pretty nice, no hiccups in several years whatsoever, bonus points if you use 1Password so it integrates with Fastmail’s masked addresses
@joshsusser Migadu is pretty reasonable...not sure about gmail import.
@joshsusser Tutamail served my needs and met my privacy concerns. Tuta.com
@joshsusser I believe Fastmail hits all these. I have enjoyed it.
@joshsusser If you don't mind a tiny, and I do mean tiny, technical overhead I can highly recommend @beasts hosting. £3.50 a month sorts my, and my family's, email needs, I bring my own domain, have full control and have some web space to play with. The service and support is also incredible - absolute wonderful folk who will put in a great deal of effort to help even in accounts paying as little as I do.
@joshsusser I can recommend runbox.com. Hosted in Norway (green energy) and a good service in the few cases you need them. And although Norway is not a 🇪🇺EU member they have implemented GDPR law. https://www.dlapiperdataprotection.com/index.html?t=law&c=NO

@joshsusser if you’re in the Apple ecosystem, you can do custom domains with iCloud mail. I didn’t try to import Gmail though. I kept Gmail as my non-personal account to give to companies or when I don’t really want someone to have my email.
@joshsusser always rec mxroute myself. fairly cheap, stable, with decent support
@joshsusser Fastmail - but be aware their SPAM filtering is not as good.
@joshsusser I like Fastmail, hey!, or Proton… Fastmail is probably the best all around for calendar, contacts, and email. Proton the most private, and Hey! the coolest and most innovative.
@joshsusser
I'm here to snertch the answer, Josh.
@joshsusser a further +1 for @fastmail — I used them for several years prior to moving to self-hosted (unrelated to any deficiency in fastmail)
@joshsusser ProtonMail is acceptable- though their CEO has made questionable choices and statements with regard to Right Wing politicians.

For something slightly more technical, I greatly recommend Migadu. I've been using them for several months now, and they're perfect for my needs.
Fastmail has never failed me
@joshsusser Fastmail all the way! Been with them almost since they started up.

@joshsusser I've really liked Migadu so far. They charge based on usage, vs something like domains, which is great for my 7 domains with minimal traffic on them. 🙂

Competent support too.
