Deleted my LinkedIn account today. Feels like a relief. Exited Facebook, Twitter and Instagram many years ago already, which also made my life more comfortable.

Mastodon, Pixelfed and other Fediverse platforms are different. You're not being manipulated by algorithms to maximize engagement, you're not bombarded by ads, not misled by fake news and "AI" generated slop posts, not numbed by nervous short videos, and other forms of enshittification.

#SocialMedia #social #media #enshittification

@metin It's weird, I haven't logged in to the site in months, my only interaction is to delete 3 messages every day without reading them (because I would have to log in to unsubscribe). Yet, I still have the account. I deleted my Amazon account of 21 years without hesitation at the beginning of 2025. Thanks for the reminder and congratulations! ;)
@mnf @tautology @ozzelot ๐Ÿ‘ My LinkedIn account had been lingering on for years now, without much activity. I was mainly approached by annoying recruiters lately.
@metin what is the fediverse equivalent to LinkedIn?

@dreamphysix FediWork is being developed, but I don't think it already exists as an accessible online platform.

@metin @dreamphysix

oh wow ok

I stand corrected ๐Ÿคฃ

@dreamphysix @metin interesting question

maybe nobody likes LinkedIn enough to implement one ๐Ÿคฃ

@metin I've been swapping between suspending it and not logging in for about two years now. Am considering deleting it for good.
@metin Thanks for reminding me I still had one. Yeeted it too. No use for it, really.

@metin tbh I'm scared to delete LinkedIn because it was the way how I found my last three or four jobs.

Out of curiosity, what do you use to find jobs?

@xgebi I know the feeling. It's the very reason I kept my LinkedIn until today. But I think a solid website with proper SEO will do more to attract the right clients than LinkedIn these days.

@metin ๐Ÿ‘

I haven't taken the step of deleting my accounts on these platforms, but I don't use them unless I have to ๐Ÿ™ˆ

@daniel ๐Ÿ‘ Just do what suits you best. ๐Ÿ™‚
@metin In that case, I should probably bury all my technology and live a peaceful life in the woods ๐Ÿ˜œ

@metin good move

I almost pulled the trigger on this last week

it's time

@metin My strategy was to keep a Facebook & LinkedIn profile under my professional name - keeps non-close family, work associates, normies, & snake oil salesfolks contained & gated in those dumpster fires. I donโ€™t go to FB or LI, I just leave them there..

Then, I have my nom de plum here, bluesky, reddit, and music streaming services for friends & public use!

Itโ€™s worked very well!

@metin jealous! LinkedIn is an easy one to get rid off, but some of the other ones aren't. Wish I could delete my accounts ๐Ÿ˜”
@metin well done! However sorry to say that#AIslop is ๐Ÿ’ฏ% on the #fediverse, as are #fakenews (albeit with a leftist slant if your instance blocked all nazi files). We are not immune nor separated from the rest of the world and users themselves (rather than the centralised entity) introduce these.
@sheislaurence Thanks. ๐Ÿ™‚ Yeah, true. I just wanted to mention as much negative points as possible about commercial social media. ๐Ÿ˜‰
@metin it's like #enshitification is somehow dirtying the fediverse, even though there is no direct intention nor gains for the tech bros. Btw, Mr enshitification himself is in the fediverse, in case you are not following him, @pluralistic ! I just started his book and offered one for Xmas too ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿคถ!
@metin Think that's the last platform I'll be able to ditch, still pretty useful for me for getting work, despite the fabricated notifications, relentless AI slop and fake work requests.

@metin

I'm not sure why I haven't done this. LinkedIn was an important tool during my sales and business development career but I retired at the end of 2021. I kept it semi-active because I was doing some consulting but haven't really been engaged with contacts for over a year. Another #NewYearsResolution2026 to add, and one easy to accomplish.

I left Twitter in 2022 and never had Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok or anything else. Mastadon is a comfortable community with hardly any opportunity to block morons.

@metin @paulbusch Would that WAY more people came to the same conclusion.

No family or friends followed me here when I left Facebook and Twitter, despite my telling any even remotely interested people who stayed there of the same upsides you describe. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

@reay @metin

My wife is still on Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends. My daughters and I regularly check her settings to reduce risk and bullshit but crap still leaks into her feed. She regularly says she would leave if friends/family also switched to something else. Some triggering effect is needed, but not something too harmful.

@reay @metin @paulbusch

I kept my Facebook account because it was the only way I could contact my oldest friend. But every time I go back over there, it's just to tell people that they should come to Mastodon. So far, not a single god damned person has followed me! I mean, from there to here.

@Quasit @reay @paulbusch Yeah, I've also noticed that people are often quite loyal to certain commercial platforms. Their loss. ๐Ÿ˜‰

@metin @reay @paulbusch

As I understand it, people have to reach a breaking point. That usually involves enshittification and the breaking of the trust thermocline. I believe that both are inevitable with for-profit systems, but I can't prove it.

I really hope it happens soon, though.

@metin I wish more people would de-billionaire-ify like that.

Please accept this random praise for your positive self-care actions. Good job!

@metin I was just thinking about how much I dislike being on LinkedIn - everything there is fake self promotion. Mastodon feels like going back to the weird early days of the internet and I absolutely love it.

(I still need LinkedIn for work though though, so ๐Ÿคท)

@metin congratulations. I did the same a few months ago and it's a relief. The signal to bullshit ratio was getting too low und it became too annoying in general. I'm now off from all commercial platforms and I don't miss them.
@lenzgr ๐Ÿ‘ Yes, LinkedIn has become Facebook disguised as a job platform. ๐Ÿ˜–
@metin I gave up on mine the day I got a friends request from a services seller I didn't know, and 5 minutes later a call from them on my unpublished work line. I don't miss that garbage one bit. Glad you also found relief!
@edrei You might have pressed the reply button instead of the boost button? ๐Ÿ˜‰
@metin Yeah, probably. My fat fingers donโ€™t get along with my iPhone virtual keyboard at all.
@metin I used to try every new social media platform like it was crack. That's actually how I wound up on Mastodon in the first place. I eventually managed to cut back to just Mastodon, Reddit, & Instagram for a few quick laughs. I log into Facebook occasionally but just to see what family is up to. I found that most timelines on Twitter-type platforms are geared to enrage and they're filled with what can only be bot posts meant to manipulate opinion. I hate it. I like that Mastodon is slower.
@Bradley_JF Recognizable. I was also eager to try new platforms, and I also really like the way Mastodon feels like the early years of social media like Twitter. ๐Ÿ‘
@metin Yup, before it turned into a dumpster fire. I jumped on Twitter back in late '06 or early '07 when I was living in Singapore. I want to say I deleted my account in 2021 or so. Then Threads turned into the same mess so I deleted that earlier this year.
@metin

Fantastic! Really happy for you!
I want to leave LinkedIn too.

Leaving Facebook and Twitter was easy as I never relied on them for income. I just left in disgust.

I freelance, and unfortunately a majority of work opportunities comes from people finding me on LinkedIn.

I'm on Xing as well, but in the Nordics where I am it seems to be deserted.
In fact it seems to have very limited expression beyond German speaking countries. And even Germans don't find me there.

I spend little time on LinkedIn beyond getting back to people and don't pay for it, but I would love to get rid of it. I just haven't found how yet.
