Triton for #StatueSaturday. He's part of the #Stuhlmannbrunnen fountain in Altona. The massive fountain (7.5 metres (25 ft) tall) was inaugurated in 1900 and depicts two centaurs battling for a fish, surrounded by sea creatures splashing water at them (with Triton among them). The centaurs are said to represent #Altona and #Hamburg, symbolising their rivalry for dominance in the fishing industry. Altona was once the German (and even European) "fishing capital" in the early 20th century and often clashed with neighbouring Hamburg. Imagine the horror of the people of Altona when their independent borough was absorbed into Hamburg in 1938 without prior notice!

By the late 20th century, the fountain had fallen into disrepair and was rarely used due to a lack of funds. It eventually became so damaged that it was closed off entirely. In the 1990s, a deal was struck with a local brewery: they donated funds for its restoration, and in return, they were permitted to cover the Altona Town Hall with beer advertisements for several weeks.

My face when I realize there's no more coffee. ๐Ÿ˜„
Thought this was Gollum for a second!
Maybe Tolkien was inspired by the fountain?! ๐Ÿ˜

@meoralis Great photo, and it definitely looks like Gollum.๐Ÿ˜

Apparently thereโ€™s a theory that the town of Altoona, Pennsylvania was named after Altona (though there are other possibilities). Altoona is one of the settings in โ€œFrankie and Johnny,โ€ one of my favorite movies. Just making random connections here ๐Ÿ˜…

@[email protected] I wouldn't be surprised, Altona must have been a well-known global player 100 years ago and certainly left its mark on the world. ๐Ÿ˜„ I've just learned that the name Altona possibly comes from "all to na" (all too near), which is what the innkeepers of Hamburg thought of the fishermen's tavern that sprang up near the Hamburg border in 1537 and grew into the town of Altona over the years. I found that fascinating too! ๐Ÿ˜€ I've always thought Altona is such an interesting name and sounds rather exotic for a German place, but never looked up the origin. (Well, I suppose Low German is an exotic language to me ๐Ÿ˜‚)
I have to admit, I've never heard of the movie, but it sounds like a good one.
@meoralis Itโ€™s a lovely rom-com, based on a play, with Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer playing an ordinary unglamorous working-class couple (not too believably, as you can imagine) ๐Ÿ˜‚ Itโ€™s also the first time I heard Debussyโ€™s โ€œClair de luneโ€ so Iโ€™m quite fond of it.
what a curiously diminutive take ๐Ÿ”ฑ
Even Greek gods of the sea were young once ๐Ÿ˜„
