More progress on my #playdate renderer. Switched to a tile based world, which gives me a bunch of advantages, the most important being its easy to render in the correct order without sorting, so only the contents of a tile itself need sorting. There's no zbuffer so I need whatever sorting tricks i can get :). I also added frustum culling and fog. This is running at 50fps on device!
damn, compression did this gif dirty šŸ˜“
@Leukbaars bravo šŸ‘ I’d this just C with their basic SDK then?
@photex yup, custom renderer in c that writes straight to screen memory
@Leukbaars fantastic. The playdate is such a wonderful device.
What about the geometry and scene? Are you doing anything particular? Stop me if you have a blog or something I can read instead of bothering you. I’m just really fascinated and love to see this stuff.
@photex been posting mostly in 3d dev channel of the playdate discord, but I will probably do a thread here at some point about how it all works :). Lots of small playdate specific optimizations and design choices
@Leukbaars ah right. I’m so bad at using forums. I’ll take a look!
@Leukbaars glad you’re still at it! This looks great

@Leukbaars I never played the game but I love the style. So it gives me the return of the orba dinn vibes.

@eugenpirogoff @Leukbaars that's the best thing about the playdate, everything shaded in 3D kinda has to look like Obra Din! Glorious
@mdiluz @eugenpirogoff even better, @dukope has actually made a game for playdate as well, Mars after Midnight
@Leukbaars this is incredible, mad props
@Leukbaars Hey Bram. Nice to see you doing Playdate stuff. This is incredible! And 50 fps on platform! 🤯
@StephanRewind Hi Stephan!! Thank you :). I'm really stoked for your sub game as well, been checking out your blog posts about it! I'm still trying to figure out where to take this 3D thing game wise haha
@Leukbaars lol I know the feeling! Back then for Outzone my some obsession was to make a horizontal scrolling run at 50 fps on Atari ST. Then I had to figure out some game around that :)
