Quite some years ago, me and the wife stopped using skin colour as a primary description of ... someone. I don't recall the exact circumstances but it was mutual.
I'm sure we're not unusual in starting off with sex, and skin colour and then perhaps hair style, clothing etc.
If you ignore skin colour then you only lose one data point and there are a lot more available.
Ignoring sex as a primary descriptor, unless required might also be a good idea.
