WTF?

The #Trump administration has ordered nearly 30 US #ambassadors in embassies around the world to return to the #UnitedStates within weeks, a move that would leave a large gap in the US #DiplomaticCorps even as Trump has said he wants to resolve conflicts through #diplomacy.

Trump Administration Orders Nearly 30 U.S. Ambassadors to Leave Their Posts

A union representing career diplomats said such a mass recall had never happened in the history of the U.S. Foreign Service.

The New York Times

Many of the #ambassadors were told in recent days to leave their posts by mid-January. They are all foreign service officers who had been appointed to their positions by the #Biden admin & confirmed by the #Senate. A standard tour is 3 to 4 years.

The #union representing career diplomats said this was the first time that such a mass recall had taken place of career diplomats serving as ambassadors or chiefs of mission.

“Those affected report being notified abruptly, typically by phone, with no explanation provided,” said Nikki Gamer, spox for the #union representing career diplomats, the American Foreign Service Assn. “That method is highly irregular.”

“The lack of transparency & process breaks sharply with longstanding norms,” she added.

After checking its archives, the union “can say definitively that such a mass recall has never happened since the founding of the Foreign Service as we know it,” Gamer said

#China has surpassed the #US in the number of diplomatic missions in the world, & maintains a consistent rotation of ambassadors through each one.

The mass recall could further damage morale among career diplomats working under Secy of State #MarcoRubio.

Earlier this month, the #union released results of a survey of its members showing that 98% of respondents said that workplace morale had fallen since #Trump began his second term.

Most of the survey’s >2,100 respondents said they were managing tighter budgets & greater workloads as the #Trump admin cut spending, including a drastic reduction in US foreign #aid. 86% said it had become more difficult to carry out #US #ForeignPolicy. Only 1% reported an improvement.

#MarcoRubio presided over what he called a “reorganization” of the department this year. The dept announced ~1,300 layoffs in July, w/ 264 foreign service officers among them.

…At one point this year, about a dozen senior career diplomats who, before the start of the #Trump administration, had gotten assignments to be deputy chiefs of mission overseas were told they would no longer have those jobs. Most of them were #women or people of color [#POC].

@Nonilex Not surprised. Bigotry in action.
@Nonilex It's all part of a plan to destroy the leadership role America has had throughout the world. Putin demanded it, the Orange Mess complied.
@Nonilex if you don't bribe Trump with a few million why should you expect to keep your job? It's not like actually knowing what to do matters to Trump.
@Nonilex
He thinks he can do it all.
Trump announces he's appointing Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry to serve as US special envoy to Greenland

President Donald Trump has announced he is appointing Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry to serve as the U.S. special envoy to Greenland, the vast, semi-autonomous territory of Denmark that Trump has said the U.S. needs to take over. Trump in a social media post on Sunday announcing the appointment said, “Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security." Trump has repeatedly called for U.S. jurisdiction over Greenland, and would not rule out military force to take control of the mineral-rich, strategically located Arctic island. Landry in a post on X called the appointment an honor and said it won't be affecting his position as governor.

@Nonilex He's about to start a war, and when he does, he doesn't want diplomats accessible overseas to be chewed out by foreign governments.
